Patrick McHardy d696c7bdaa netfilter: nf_conntrack: fix hash resizing with namespaces
As noticed by Jon Masters <jonathan@jonmasters.org>, the conntrack hash
size is global and not per namespace, but modifiable at runtime through
/sys/module/nf_conntrack/hashsize. Changing the hash size will only
resize the hash in the current namespace however, so other namespaces
will use an invalid hash size. This can cause crashes when enlarging
the hashsize, or false negative lookups when shrinking it.

Move the hash size into the per-namespace data and only use the global
hash size to initialize the per-namespace value when instanciating a
new namespace. Additionally restrict hash resizing to init_net for
now as other namespaces are not handled currently.

Eric Dumazet 5b3501faa8 netfilter: nf_conntrack: per netns nf_conntrack_cachep
nf_conntrack_cachep is currently shared by all netns instances, but
because of SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU special semantics, this is wrong.

If we use a shared slab cache, one object can instantly flight between
one hash table (netns ONE) to another one (netns TWO), and concurrent
reader (doing a lookup in netns ONE, 'finding' an object of netns TWO)
can be fooled without notice, because no RCU grace period has to be
observed between object freeing and its reuse.

We dont have this problem with UDP/TCP slab caches because TCP/UDP
hashtables are global to the machine (and each object has a pointer to
its netns).

If we use per netns conntrack hash tables, we also *must* use per netns
conntrack slab caches, to guarantee an object can not escape from one
namespace to another one.

Patrick McHardy 9edd7ca0a3 netfilter: nf_conntrack: fix memory corruption with multiple namespaces
As discovered by Jon Masters <jonathan@jonmasters.org>, the "untracked"
conntrack, which is located in the data section, might be accidentally
freed when a new namespace is instantiated while the untracked conntrack
is attached to a skb because the reference count it re-initialized.

The best fix would be to use a seperate untracked conntrack per
namespace since it includes a namespace pointer. Unfortunately this is
not possible without larger changes since the namespace is not easily
available everywhere we need it. For now move the untracked conntrack
initialization to the init_net setup function to make sure the reference
count is not re-initialized and handle cleanup in the init_net cleanup
function to make sure namespaces can exit properly while the untracked
conntrack is in use in other namespaces.

Add a new target for the raw table, which can be used to specify conntrack
parameters for specific connections, f.i. the conntrack helper.

The target attaches a "template" connection tracking entry to the skb, which
is used by the conntrack core when initializing a new conntrack.

Patrick McHardy 0cebe4b416 netfilter: ctnetlink: support selective event delivery
Add two masks for conntrack end expectation events to struct nf_conntrack_ecache
and use them to filter events. Their default value is "all events" when the
event sysctl is on and "no events" when it is off. A following patch will add
specific initializations. Expectation events depend on the ecache struct of
their master conntrack.

Patrick McHardy 858b313300 netfilter: nf_conntrack: split up IPCT_STATUS event
Split up the IPCT_STATUS event into an IPCT_REPLY event, which is generated
when the IPS_SEEN_REPLY bit is set, and an IPCT_ASSURED event, which is
generated when the IPS_ASSURED bit is set.

In combination with a following patch to support selective event delivery,
this can be used for "sparse" conntrack replication: start replicating the
conntrack entry after it reached the ASSURED state and that way it's SYN-flood
resistant.

Make sure not to assign a helper for a different network or transport
layer protocol to a connection.

Additionally change expectation deletion by helper to compare the name
directly - there might be multiple helper registrations using the same
name, currently one of them is chosen in an unpredictable manner and
only those expectations are removed.

The entire locking concept is overly complicated, tables are only
created/referenced and released in process context, so a single
mutex works just fine. Remove the hashinfo_spinlock and atomic
reference count and use the mutex to protect table lookups/creation
and reference count changes.

Simon Arlott 10a199394b netfilter: xt_TCPMSS: SYN packets are allowed to contain data
The TCPMSS target is dropping SYN packets where:
  1) There is data, or
  2) The data offset makes the TCP header larger than the packet.

Both of these result in an error level printk. This printk has been
removed.

This change avoids dropping SYN packets containing data. If there
is also no MSS option (as well as data), one will not be added
because of possible complications due to the increased packet size.

commit 8a27f7c90f
changed the output style of %pi4 to use fixed
width leading zero IP addresses "001.002.003.004".

It's useful when printing multiple lines of
addresses, but was a change in output style for
some existing uses.

Using %pI4 restores the previous output style.

Catalin(ux) M. BOIE 6f7edb4881 IPVS: Allow boot time change of hash size
I was very frustrated about the fact that I have to recompile the kernel
to change the hash size. So, I created this patch.

If IPVS is built-in you can append ip_vs.conn_tab_bits=?? to kernel
command line, or, if you built IPVS as modules, you can add
options ip_vs conn_tab_bits=??.

To keep everything backward compatible, you still can select the size at
compile time, and that will be used as default.

It has been about a year since this patch was originally posted
and subsequently dropped on the basis of insufficient test data.

Mark Bergsma has provided the following test results which seem
to strongly support the need for larger hash table sizes:

We do however run into the same problem with the default setting (212 =
4096 entries), as most of our LVS balancers handle around a million
connections/SLAB entries at any point in time (around 100-150 kpps
load). With only 4096 hash table entries this implies that each entry
consists of a linked list of 256 connections *on average*.

To provide some statistics, I did an oprofile run on an 2.6.31 kernel,
with both the default 4096 table size, and the same kernel recompiled
with IP_VS_CONN_TAB_BITS set to 18 (218 = 262144 entries). I built a
quick test setup with a part of Wikimedia/Wikipedia's live traffic
mirrored by the switch to the test host.

With the default setting, at ~ 120 kpps packet load we saw a typical %si
CPU usage of around 30-35%, and oprofile reported a hot spot in
ip_vs_conn_in_get:

Arjan van de Ven 04bcef2a83 ipvs: Add boundary check on ioctl arguments
The ipvs code has a nifty system for doing the size of ioctl command
copies; it defines an array with values into which it indexes the cmd
to find the right length.

Unfortunately, the ipvs code forgot to check if the cmd was in the
range that the array provides, allowing for an index outside of the
array, which then gives a "garbage" result into the length, which
then gets used for copying into a stack buffer.

Fix this by adding sanity checks on these as well as the copy size.

André Goddard Rosa e7d2860b69 tree-wide: convert open calls to remove spaces to skip_spaces() lib function
Makes use of skip_spaces() defined in lib/string.c for removing leading
spaces from strings all over the tree.

It decreases lib.a code size by 47 bytes and reuses the function tree-wide:

Also, while at it, if we see (*str && isspace(*str)), we can be sure to
remove the first condition (*str) as the second one (isspace(*str)) also
evaluates to 0 whenever *str == 0, making it redundant. In other words,
"a char equals zero is never a space".

Julia Lawall tried the semantic patch (http://coccinelle.lip6.fr) below,
and found occurrences of this pattern on 3 more files:

Simon Horman 258c889362 ipvs: zero usvc and udest
Make sure that any otherwise uninitialised fields of usvc are zero.

This has been obvserved to cause a problem whereby the port of
fwmark services may end up as a non-zero value which causes
scheduling of a destination server to fail for persisitent services.

Xiaotian Feng 9abfe315de ipvs: fix synchronization on connection close
commit 9d3a0de makes slaves expire as they would do on the master
with much shorter timeouts. But it introduces another problem:
When we close a connection, on master server the connection became
CLOSE_WAIT/TIME_WAIT, it was synced to slaves, but if master is
finished within it's timeouts (CLOSE), it will not be synced to
slaves. Then slaves will be kept on CLOSE_WAIT/TIME_WAIT until
timeout reaches. Thus we should also sync with CLOSE.

Florian Westphal 3a0429292d netfilter: xtables: fix conntrack match v1 ipt-save output
commit d6d3f08b0f
(netfilter: xtables: conntrack match revision 2) does break the
v1 conntrack match iptables-save output in a subtle way.

Problem is as follows:

As the v2 struct pointer is saved in the match data space,
it clobbers the first structure member (->origsrc_addr).

Because the _v1 match function grabs this pointer and does not actually
look at the v1 origsrc, run time functionality does not break.
But iptables -nvL (or iptables-save) cannot know that v1 origsrc_addr
has been overloaded in this way:

$ iptables -p tcp -A OUTPUT -m conntrack --ctorigsrc 10.0.0.1 -j ACCEPT
$ iptables-save
-A OUTPUT -p tcp -m conntrack --ctorigsrc 128.173.134.206 -j ACCEPT

(128.173... is the address to the v2 match structure).

To fix this, we take advantage of the fact that the v1 and v2 structures
are identical with exception of the last two structure members (u8 in v1,
u16 in v2).

We extract them as early as possible and prevent the v2 matching function
from looking at those two members directly.

Pablo Neira Ayuso c4832c7bbc netfilter: nf_ct_tcp: improve out-of-sync situation in TCP tracking
Without this patch, if we receive a SYN packet from the client while
the firewall is out-of-sync, we let it go through. Then, if we see
the SYN/ACK reply coming from the server, we destroy the conntrack
entry and drop the packet to trigger a new retransmission. Then,
the retransmision from the client is used to start a new clean
session.

This patch improves the current handling. Basically, if we see an
unexpected SYN packet, we annotate the TCP options. Then, if we
see the reply SYN/ACK, this means that the firewall was indeed
out-of-sync. Therefore, we set a clean new session from the existing
entry based on the annotated values.

This patch adds two new 8-bits fields that fit in a 16-bits gap of
the ip_ct_tcp structure.

This patch is particularly useful for conntrackd since the
asynchronous nature of the state-synchronization allows to have
backup nodes that are not perfect copies of the master. This helps
to improve the recovery under some worst-case scenarios.

I have tested this by creating lots of conntrack entries in wrong
state:

Eric W. Biederman f8572d8f2a sysctl net: Remove unused binary sysctl code
Now that sys_sysctl is a compatiblity wrapper around /proc/sys
all sysctl strategy routines, and all ctl_name and strategy
entries in the sysctl tables are unused, and can be
revmoed.

In addition neigh_sysctl_register has been modified to no longer
take a strategy argument and it's callers have been modified not
to pass one.

Jozsef Kadlecsik f9dd09c7f7 netfilter: nf_nat: fix NAT issue in 2.6.30.4+
Vitezslav Samel discovered that since 2.6.30.4+ active FTP can not work
over NAT. The "cause" of the problem was a fix of unacknowledged data
detection with NAT (commit a3a9f79e36).
However, actually, that fix uncovered a long standing bug in TCP conntrack:
when NAT was enabled, we simply updated the max of the right edge of
the segments we have seen (td_end), by the offset NAT produced with
changing IP/port in the data. However, we did not update the other parameter
(td_maxend) which is affected by the NAT offset. Thus that could drift
away from the correct value and thus resulted breaking active FTP.

The patch below fixes the issue by *not* updating the conntrack parameters
from NAT, but instead taking into account the NAT offsets in conntrack in a
consistent way. (Updating from NAT would be more harder and expensive because
it'd need to re-calculate parameters we already calculated in conntrack.)

read-mostly cache line (inside struct sock_common) and move sk_refcnt
to a separate cache line (only written by rx path)

This patch adds inet_ prefix to daddr, rcv_saddr, dport, num, saddr,
sport and id fields. This allows a future patch to define these
fields as macros, like sk_refcnt, without name clashes.

Jan Beulich 4481374ce8 mm: replace various uses of num_physpages by totalram_pages
Sizing of memory allocations shouldn't depend on the number of physical
pages found in a system, as that generally includes (perhaps a huge amount
of) non-RAM pages.  The amount of what actually is usable as storage
should instead be used as a basis here.

Some of the calculations (i.e.  those not intending to use high memory)
should likely even use (totalram_pages - totalhigh_pages).

Julius Volz 94b265514a IPVS: Add handling of incoming ICMPV6 messages
Add handling of incoming ICMPv6 messages.
This follows the handling of IPv4 ICMP messages.

Amongst ther things this problem allows IPVS to behave sensibly
when an ICMPV6_PKT_TOOBIG message is received:

This message is received when a realserver sends a packet >PMTU to the
client. The hop on this path with insufficient MTU will generate an
ICMPv6 Packet Too Big message back to the VIP. The LVS server receives
this message, but the call to the function handling this has been
missing. Thus, IPVS fails to forward the message to the real server,
which then does not adjust the path MTU. This patch adds the missing
call to ip_vs_in_icmp_v6() in ip_vs_in() to handle this situation.

Thanks to Rob Gallagher from HEAnet for reporting this issue and for
testing this patch in production (with direct routing mode).

Eric Dumazet c1a8f1f1c8 net: restore gnet_stats_basic to previous definition
In 5e140dfc1f "net: reorder struct Qdisc
for better SMP performance" the definition of struct gnet_stats_basic
changed incompatibly, as copies of this struct are shipped to
userland via netlink.

Restoring old behavior is not welcome, for performance reason.

Fix is to use a private structure for kernel, and
teach gnet_stats_copy_basic() to convert from kernel to user land,
using legacy structure (struct gnet_stats_basic)

When a slab cache uses SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU, we must be careful when allocating
objects, since slab allocator could give a freed object still used by lockless
readers.

In particular, nf_conntrack RCU lookups rely on ct->tuplehash[xxx].hnnode.next
being always valid (ie containing a valid 'nulls' value, or a valid pointer to next
object in hash chain.)

kmem_cache_zalloc() setups object with NULL values, but a NULL value is not valid
for ct->tuplehash[xxx].hnnode.next.

Fix is to call kmem_cache_alloc() and do the zeroing ourself.

As spotted by Patrick, we also need to make sure lookup keys are committed to
memory before setting refcount to 1, or a lockless reader could get a reference
on the old version of the object. Its key re-check could then pass the barrier.

Johannes Berg 134e63756d genetlink: make netns aware
This makes generic netlink network namespace aware. No
generic netlink families except for the controller family
are made namespace aware, they need to be checked one by
one and then set the family->netnsok member to true.

A new function genlmsg_multicast_netns() is introduced to
allow sending a multicast message in a given namespace,
for example when it applies to an object that lives in
that namespace, a new function genlmsg_multicast_allns()
to send a message to all network namespaces (for objects
that do not have an associated netns).

The function genlmsg_multicast() is changed to multicast
the message in just init_net, which is currently correct
for all generic netlink families since they only work in
init_net right now. Some will later want to work in all
net namespaces because they do not care about the netns
at all -- those will have to be converted to use one of
the new functions genlmsg_multicast_allns() or
genlmsg_multicast_netns() whenever they are made netns
aware in some way.

After this patch families can easily decide whether or
not they should be available in all net namespaces. Many
genl families us it for objects not related to networking
and should therefore be available in all namespaces, but
that will have to be done on a per family basis.

Note that this doesn't touch on the checkpoint/restart
problem where network namespaces could be used, genl
families and multicast groups are numbered globally and
I see no easy way of changing that, especially since it
must be possible to multicast to all network namespaces
for those families that do not care about netns.

When NAT helpers change the TCP packet size, the highest seen sequence
number needs to be corrected. This is currently only done upwards, when
the packet size is reduced the sequence number is unchanged. This causes
TCP conntrack to falsely detect unacknowledged data and decrease the
timeout.

Fix by updating the highest seen sequence number in both directions after
packet mangling.

RCU barriers, rcu_barrier(), is inserted two places.

 In nf_conntrack_expect.c nf_conntrack_expect_fini() before the
 kmem_cache_destroy().  Firstly to make sure the callback to the
 nf_ct_expect_free_rcu() code is still around.  Secondly because I'm
 unsure about the consequence of having in flight
 nf_ct_expect_free_rcu/kmem_cache_free() calls while doing a
 kmem_cache_destroy() slab destroy.

 And in nf_conntrack_extend.c nf_ct_extend_unregister(), inorder to
 wait for completion of callbacks to __nf_ct_ext_free_rcu(), which is
 invoked by __nf_ct_ext_add().  It might be more efficient to call
 rcu_barrier() in nf_conntrack_core.c nf_conntrack_cleanup_net(), but
 thats make it more difficult to read the code (as the callback code
 in located in nf_conntrack_extend.c).

(nulls lookup algo must check the null value at the end of lookup and
should restart if the null value is not the expected one.

We need to change nf_conntrack_init_net() and use a different "null" value,
guaranteed not being used in regular lists. Choose very large values, since
hash table uses [0..size-1] null values.

Pablo Neira Ayuso dd7669a92c netfilter: conntrack: optional reliable conntrack event delivery
This patch improves ctnetlink event reliability if one broadcast
listener has set the NETLINK_BROADCAST_ERROR socket option.

The logic is the following: if an event delivery fails, we keep
the undelivered events in the missed event cache. Once the next
packet arrives, we add the new events (if any) to the missed
events in the cache and we try a new delivery, and so on. Thus,
if ctnetlink fails to deliver an event, we try to deliver them
once we see a new packet. Therefore, we may lose state
transitions but the userspace process gets in sync at some point.

At worst case, if no events were delivered to userspace, we make
sure that destroy events are successfully delivered. Basically,
if ctnetlink fails to deliver the destroy event, we remove the
conntrack entry from the hashes and we insert them in the dying
list, which contains inactive entries. Then, the conntrack timer
is added with an extra grace timeout of random32() % 15 seconds
to trigger the event again (this grace timeout is tunable via
/proc). The use of a limited random timeout value allows
distributing the "destroy" resends, thus, avoiding accumulating
lots "destroy" events at the same time. Event delivery may
re-order but we can identify them by means of the tuple plus
the conntrack ID.

The maximum number of conntrack entries (active or inactive) is
still handled by nf_conntrack_max. Thus, we may start dropping
packets at some point if we accumulate a lot of inactive conntrack
entries that did not successfully report the destroy event to
userspace.

During my stress tests consisting of setting a very small buffer
of 2048 bytes for conntrackd and the NETLINK_BROADCAST_ERROR socket
flag, and generating lots of very small connections, I noticed
very few destroy entries on the fly waiting to be resend.

A simple way to test this patch consist of creating a lot of
entries, set a very small Netlink buffer in conntrackd (+ a patch
which is not in the git tree to set the BROADCAST_ERROR flag)
and invoke `conntrack -F'.

For expectations, no changes are introduced in this patch.
Currently, event delivery is only done for new expectations (no
events from expectation expiration, removal and confirmation).
In that case, they need a per-expectation event cache to implement
the same idea that is exposed in this patch.

This patch can be useful to provide reliable flow-accouting. We
still have to add a new conntrack extension to store the creation
and destroy time.

Pablo Neira Ayuso a0891aa6a6 netfilter: conntrack: move event caching to conntrack extension infrastructure
This patch reworks the per-cpu event caching to use the conntrack
extension infrastructure.

The main drawback is that we consume more memory per conntrack
if event delivery is enabled. This patch is required by the
reliable event delivery that follows to this patch.

BTW, this patch allows you to enable/disable event delivery via
/proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_events in runtime, although
you can still disable event caching as compilation option.

Patrick McHardy 65cb9fda32 netfilter: nf_conntrack: use mod_timer_pending() for conntrack refresh
Use mod_timer_pending() instead of atomic sequence of del_timer()/
add_timer(). mod_timer_pending() does not rearm an inactive timer,
so we don't need the conntrack lock anymore to make sure we don't
accidentally rearm a timer of a conntrack which is in the process
of being destroyed.

With this change, we don't need to take the global lock anymore at all,
counter updates can be performed under the per-conntrack lock.

Evgeniy Polyakov 11eeef41d5 netfilter: passive OS fingerprint xtables match
Passive OS fingerprinting netfilter module allows to passively detect
remote OS and perform various netfilter actions based on that knowledge.
This module compares some data (WS, MSS, options and it's order, ttl, df
and others) from packets with SYN bit set with dynamically loaded OS
fingerprints.

Fingerprint matching rules can be downloaded from OpenBSD source tree
or found in archive and loaded via netfilter netlink subsystem into
the kernel via special util found in archive.

Archive contains library file (also attached), which was shipped
with iptables extensions some time ago (at least when ipt_osf existed
in patch-o-matic).

Following changes were made in this release:
 * added NLM_F_CREATE/NLM_F_EXCL checks
 * dropped _rcu list traversing helpers in the protected add/remove calls
 * dropped unneded structures, debug prints, obscure comment and check

Florian Westphal 10662aa308 netfilter: xt_NFQUEUE: queue balancing support
Adds support for specifying a range of queues instead of a single queue
id. Flows will be distributed across the given range.

This is useful for multicore systems: Instead of having a single
application read packets from a queue, start multiple
instances on queues x, x+1, .. x+n. Each instance can process
flows independently.

Packets for the same connection are put into the same queue.

Pablo Neira Ayuso e34d5c1a4f netfilter: conntrack: replace notify chain by function pointer
This patch removes the notify chain infrastructure and replace it
by a simple function pointer. This issue has been mentioned in the
mailing list several times: the use of the notify chain adds
too much overhead for something that is only used by ctnetlink.

This patch also changes nfnetlink_send(). It seems that gfp_any()
returns GFP_KERNEL for user-context request, like those via
ctnetlink, inside the RCU read-side section which is not valid.
Using GFP_KERNEL is also evil since netlink may schedule(),
this leads to "scheduling while atomic" bug reports.

This patch simplifies the conntrack event caching system by removing
several events:

 * IPCT_[*]_VOLATILE, IPCT_HELPINFO and IPCT_NATINFO has been deleted
   since the have no clients.
 * IPCT_COUNTER_FILLING which is a leftover of the 32-bits counter
   days.
 * IPCT_REFRESH which is not of any use since we always include the
   timeout in the messages.

After this patch, the existing events are:

 * IPCT_NEW, IPCT_RELATED and IPCT_DESTROY, that are used to identify
 addition and deletion of entries.
 * IPCT_STATUS, that notes that the status bits have changes,
 eg. IPS_SEEN_REPLY and IPS_ASSURED.
 * IPCT_PROTOINFO, that reports that internal protocol information has
 changed, eg. the TCP, DCCP and SCTP protocol state.
 * IPCT_HELPER, that a helper has been assigned or unassigned to this
 entry.
 * IPCT_MARK and IPCT_SECMARK, that reports that the mark has changed, this
 covers the case when a mark is set to zero.
 * IPCT_NATSEQADJ, to report that there's updates in the NAT sequence
 adjustment.

The RST packet was dropped in the raw table, thus it did not reach
conntrack.  nfnetlink_conntrack is unpatched so it shows the new SYN_SENT2
state as the old unused LISTEN.

With TCP simultaneous open support we satisfy REQ-2 in RFC 5382  ;-) .

Additional minor correction in this patch is that in order to catch
uninitialized reply directions, "td_maxwin == 0" is used instead of
"td_end == 0" because the former can't be true except in uninitialized
state while td_end may accidentally be equal to zero in the mid of a
connection.

Jozsef Kadlecsik bfcaa50270 netfilter: nf_ct_tcp: fix accepting invalid RST segments
Robert L Mathews discovered that some clients send evil TCP RST segments,
which are accepted by netfilter conntrack but discarded by the
destination. Thus the conntrack entry is destroyed but the destination
retransmits data until timeout.

The same technique, i.e. sending properly crafted RST segments, can easily
be used to bypass connlimit/connbytes based restrictions (the sample
script written by Robert can be found in the netfilter mailing list
archives).

The patch below adds a new flag and new field to struct ip_ct_tcp_state so
that checking RST segments can be made more strict and thus TCP conntrack
can catch the invalid ones: the RST segment is accepted only if its
sequence number higher than or equal to the highest ack we seen from the
other direction. (The last_ack field cannot be reused because it is used
to catch resent packets.)

Simon Horman be8be9eccb ipvs: Fix IPv4 FWMARK virtual services
This fixes the use of fwmarks to denote IPv4 virtual services
which was unfortunately broken as a result of the integration
of IPv6 support into IPVS, which was included in 2.6.28.

The problem arises because fwmarks are stored in the 4th octet
of a union nf_inet_addr .all, however in the case of IPv4 only
the first octet, corresponding to .ip, is assigned and compared.

In other words, using .all = { 0, 0, 0, htonl(svc->fwmark) always
results in a value of 0 (32bits) being stored for IPv4. This means
that one fwmark can be used, as it ends up being mapped to 0, but things
break down when multiple fwmarks are used, as they all end up being mapped
to 0.

As fwmarks are 32bits a reasonable fix seems to be to just store the fwmark
in .ip, and comparing and storing .ip when fwmarks are used.

This patch makes the assumption that in calls to ip_vs_ct_in_get()
and ip_vs_sched_persist() if the proto parameter is IPPROTO_IP then
we are dealing with an fwmark. I believe this is valid as ip_vs_in()
does fairly strict filtering on the protocol and IPPROTO_IP should
not be used in these calls unless explicitly passed when making
these calls for fwmarks in ip_vs_sched_persist().

The problem is related to this checking:

if (info->node_mask >= (1 << info->total_nodes)) {

}

(1 << 32) is 1. Thus, the checking fails.

BTW, I said this before but I insist: I have only tested the cluster
match with 2 nodes getting ~45% extra performance in an active-active setup.
The maximum limit of 32 nodes is still completely arbitrary. I'd really
appreciate if people that have more nodes in their setups let me know.

Stephen Hemminger 942e4a2bd6 netfilter: revised locking for x_tables
The x_tables are organized with a table structure and a per-cpu copies
of the counters and rules. On older kernels there was a reader/writer 
lock per table which was a performance bottleneck. In 2.6.30-rc, this
was converted to use RCU and the counters/rules which solved the performance
problems for do_table but made replacing rules much slower because of
the necessary RCU grace period.

This version uses a per-cpu set of spinlocks and counters to allow to
table processing to proceed without the cache thrashing of a global
reader lock and keeps the same performance for table updates.

Pablo Neira Ayuso 83731671d9 netfilter: ctnetlink: fix regression in expectation handling
This patch fixes a regression (introduced by myself in commit 19abb7b:
netfilter: ctnetlink: deliver events for conntracks changed from
userspace) that results in an expectation re-insertion since
__nf_ct_expect_check() may return 0 for expectation timer refreshing.

This patch also removes a unnecessary refcount bump that
pretended to avoid a possible race condition with event delivery
and expectation timers (as said, not needed since we hold a
reference to the object since until we finish the expectation
setup). This also merges nf_ct_expect_related_report() and
nf_ct_expect_related() which look basically the same.

ERROR: "__ipv6_addr_type" [net/netfilter/xt_cluster.ko] undefined!

This patch adds a function that checks if the higher bits of the
address is 0xFF to identify a multicast address, instead of adding a
dependency due to __ipv6_addr_type(). I came up with this idea after
Patrick McHardy pointed possible problems with runtime module
dependencies.

Harvey Harrison f940964901 netfilter: fix endian bug in conntrack printks
dcc_ip is treated as a host-endian value in the first printk,
but the second printk uses %pI4 which expects a be32.  This
will cause a mismatch between the debug statement and the
warning statement.

Treat as a be32 throughout and avoid some byteswapping during
some comparisions, and allow another user of HIPQUAD to bite the
dust.

Holger Eitzenberger d271e8bd8c ctnetlink: compute generic part of event more acurately
On a box with most of the optional Netfilter switches turned off some
of the NLAs are never send, e. g. secmark, mark or the conntrack
byte/packet counters.  As a worst case scenario this may possibly
still lead to ctnetlink skbs being reallocated in netlink_trim()
later, loosing all the nice effects from the previous patches.

I try to solve that (at least partly) by correctly #ifdef'ing the
NLAs in the computation.

Try to allocate a Netlink skb roughly the size of the actual
message, with the help from the l3 and l4 protocol helpers.
This is all to prevent a reallocation in netlink_trim() later.

The overhead of allocating the right-sized skb is rather small, with
ctnetlink_alloc_skb() actually being inlined away on my x86_64 box.
The size of the per-proto space is determined at registration time of
the protocol helper.

Eric Dumazet ea781f197d netfilter: nf_conntrack: use SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU and get rid of call_rcu()
Use "hlist_nulls" infrastructure we added in 2.6.29 for RCUification of UDP & TCP.

This permits an easy conversion from call_rcu() based hash lists to a
SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU one.

Avoiding call_rcu() delay at nf_conn freeing time has numerous gains.

First, it doesnt fill RCU queues (up to 10000 elements per cpu).
This reduces OOM possibility, if queued elements are not taken into account
This reduces latency problems when RCU queue size hits hilimit and triggers
emergency mode.

- It allows fast reuse of just freed elements, permitting better use of
CPU cache.

- We delete rcu_head from "struct nf_conn", shrinking size of this structure
by 8 or 16 bytes.

This patch only takes care of "struct nf_conn".
call_rcu() is still used for less critical conntrack parts, that may
be converted later if necessary.

set if it's an expected connection.  But the number of optional NLAs is
small enough to prevent netlink_trim() from reallocating if calculated
properly.

Jason Baron e9d376f0fa dynamic debug: combine dprintk and dynamic printk
This patch combines Greg Bank's dprintk() work with the existing dynamic
printk patchset, we are now calling it 'dynamic debug'.

The new feature of this patchset is a richer /debugfs control file interface,
(an example output from my system is at the bottom), which allows fined grained
control over the the debug output. The output can be controlled by function,
file, module, format string, and line number.

for example, enabled all debug messages in module 'nf_conntrack':

echo -n 'module nf_conntrack +p' > /mnt/debugfs/dynamic_debug/control

to disable them:

echo -n 'module nf_conntrack -p' > /mnt/debugfs/dynamic_debug/control

We use RCU to defer freeing of conntrack structures. In DOS situation, RCU might
accumulate about 10.000 elements per CPU in its internal queues. To get accurate
conntrack counts (at the expense of slightly more RAM used), we might consider
conntrack counter not taking into account "about to be freed elements, waiting
in RCU queues". We thus decrement it in nf_conntrack_free(), not in the RCU
callback.

Eric Leblond 176252746e netfilter: sysctl support of logger choice
This patchs adds support of modification of the used logger via sysctl.
It can be used to change the logger to module that can not use the bind
operation (ipt_LOG and ipt_ULOG). For this purpose, it creates a
directory /proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_log which contains a file
per-protocol. The content of the file is the name current logger (NONE if
not set) and a logger can be setup by simply echoing its name to the file.
By echoing "NONE" to a /proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_log/PROTO file, the
logger corresponding to this PROTO is set to NULL.

Pablo Neira Ayuso 0269ea4937 netfilter: xtables: add cluster match
This patch adds the iptables cluster match. This match can be used
to deploy gateway and back-end load-sharing clusters. The cluster
can be composed of 32 nodes maximum (although I have only tested
this with two nodes, so I cannot tell what is the real scalability
limit of this solution in terms of cluster nodes).

Assuming that all the nodes see all packets (see below for an
example on how to do that if your switch does not allow this), the
cluster match decides if this node has to handle a packet given:

	(jhash(source IP) % total_nodes) & node_mask

For related connections, the master conntrack is used. The following
is an example of its use to deploy a gateway cluster composed of two
nodes (where this is the node 1):

In the case of TCP connections, pickup facility has to be disabled
to avoid marking TCP ACK packets coming in the reply direction as

 * This match mangles the skbuff pkt_type in case that it detects
PACKET_MULTICAST for a non-multicast address. This may be done in
a PKTTYPE target for this sole purpose.
 * This match supersedes the CLUSTERIP target.

We currently use the negative value in the conntrack code to encode
the packet verdict in the error. As NF_DROP is equal to 0, inverting

Eric Leblond ca735b3aaa netfilter: use a linked list of loggers
This patch modifies nf_log to use a linked list of loggers for each
protocol. This list of loggers is read and write protected with a
mutex.

This patch separates registration and binding. To be used as
logging module, a module has to register calling nf_log_register()
and to bind to a protocol it has to call nf_log_bind_pf().
This patch also converts the logging modules to the new API. For nfnetlink_log,
it simply switchs call to register functions to call to bind function and
adds a call to nf_log_register() during init. For other modules, it just
remove a const flag from the logger structure and replace it with a
__read_mostly.

Josef Drexler 325fb5b4d2 netfilter: xt_recent: fix proc-file addition/removal of IPv4 addresses
Fix regression introduded by commit 079aa88 (netfilter: xt_recent: IPv6 support):

Problem Description:
An uninitialized buffer causes IPv4 addresses added manually (via the +IP
command to the proc interface) to never match any packets. Similarly, the -IP
command fails to remove IPv4 addresses.

Details:
In the function recent_entry_lookup, the xt_recent module does comparisons of
the entire nf_inet_addr union value, both for IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. For
addresses initialized from actual packets the remaining 12 bytes not occupied
by the IPv4 are zeroed so this works correctly. However when setting the
nf_inet_addr addr variable in the recent_mt_proc_write function, only the IPv4
bytes are initialized and the remaining 12 bytes contain garbage.

Hence addresses added in this way never match any packets, unless these
uninitialized 12 bytes happened to be zero by coincidence. Similarly, addresses
cannot consistently be removed using the proc interface due to mismatch of the
garbage bytes (although it will sometimes work to remove an address that was
added manually).

Reading the /proc/net/xt_recent/ entries hides this problem because this only
uses the first 4 bytes when displaying IPv4 addresses.

Steps to reproduce:
$ iptables -I INPUT -m recent --rcheck -j LOG
$ echo +169.254.156.239 > /proc/net/xt_recent/DEFAULT
$ cat /proc/net/xt_recent/DEFAULT

[At this point no packets from 169.254.156.239 are being logged.]

Stephen Hemminger 784544739a netfilter: iptables: lock free counters
The reader/writer lock in ip_tables is acquired in the critical path of
processing packets and is one of the reasons just loading iptables can cause
a 20% performance loss. The rwlock serves two functions:

1) it prevents changes to table state (xt_replace) while table is in use.
   This is now handled by doing rcu on the xt_table. When table is
   replaced, the new table(s) are put in and the old one table(s) are freed
   after RCU period.

2) it provides synchronization when accesing the counter values.
   This is now handled by swapping in new table_info entries for each cpu
   then summing the old values, and putting the result back onto one
   cpu.  On a busy system it may cause sampling to occur at different
   times on each cpu, but no packet/byte counts are lost in the process.

In NFLOG the per-rule qthreshold should overrides per-instance only
it is set. With current code, the per-rule qthreshold is 1 if not set
and it overrides the per-instance qthreshold.

This patch modifies the default xt_NFLOG threshold from 1 to
0. Thus a value of 0 means there is no per-rule setting and the instance
parameter has to apply.

Herbert Xu 9a279bcbe3 net: Partially allow skb destructors to be used on receive path
As it currently stands, skb destructors are forbidden on the
receive path because the protocol end-points will overwrite
any existing destructor with their own.

This is the reason why we have to call skb_orphan in the loopback
driver before we reinject the packet back into the stack, thus
creating a period during which loopback traffic isn't charged
to any socket.

With virtualisation, we have a similar problem in that traffic
is reinjected into the stack without being associated with any
socket entity, thus providing no natural congestion push-back
for those poor folks still stuck with UDP.

Now had we been consistent in telling them that UDP simply has
no congestion feedback, I could just fob them off.  Unfortunately,
we appear to have gone to some length in catering for this on
the standard UDP path, with skb/socket accounting so that has
created a very unhealthy dependency.

Alas habits are difficult to break out of, so we may just have
to allow skb destructors on the receive path.

It turns out that making skb destructors useable on the receive path
isn't as easy as it seems.  For instance, simply adding skb_orphan
to skb_set_owner_r isn't enough.  This is because we assume all
over the IP stack that skb->sk is an IP socket if present.

The new transparent proxy code goes one step further and assumes
that skb->sk is the receiving socket if present.

Now all of this can be dealt with by adding simple checks such
as only treating skb->sk as an IP socket if skb->sk->sk_family
matches.  However, it turns out that for bridging at least we
don't need to do all of this work.

This is of interest because most virtualisation setups use bridging
so we don't actually go through the IP stack on the host (with
the exception of our old nemesis the bridge netfilter, but that's
easily taken care of).

So this patch simply adds skb_orphan to the point just before we
enter the IP stack, but after we've gone through the bridge on the
receive path.  It also adds an skb_orphan to the one place in
netfilter that touches skb->sk/skb->destructor, that is, tproxy.

One word of caution, because of the internal code structure, anyone
wishing to deploy this must use skb_set_owner_w as opposed to
skb_set_owner_r since many functions that create a new skb from
an existing one will invoke skb_set_owner_w on the new skb.

Patrick McHardy 656caff20e netfilter 04/09: x_tables: fix match/target revision lookup
Commit 55b69e91 (netfilter: implement NFPROTO_UNSPEC as a wildcard
for extensions) broke revision probing for matches and targets that
are registered with NFPROTO_UNSPEC.

Fix by continuing the search on the NFPROTO_UNSPEC list if nothing
is found on the af-specific lists.

Rusty Russell 0f23174aa8 cpumask: prepare for iterators to only go to nr_cpu_ids/nr_cpumask_bits: net
In future all cpumask ops will only be valid (in general) for bit
numbers < nr_cpu_ids.  So use that instead of NR_CPUS in iterators
and other comparisons.

This is always safe: no cpu number can be >= nr_cpu_ids, and
nr_cpu_ids is initialized to NR_CPUS at boot.

Balazs Scheidler c49b9f295e tproxy: fixe a possible read from an invalid location in the socket match
TIME_WAIT sockets need to be handled specially, and the socket match
casted inet_timewait_sock instances to inet_sock, which are not
compatible.

- the timer may expire and free the conntrack concurrently, causing an
  invalid memory access when attempting to put it in the hash tables

- an identical conntrack entry may be created in the packet processing
  path in the time between the lookup and hash insertion

Hold the conntrack lock between the lookup and insertion to avoid this.

Pablo Neira Ayuso 19abb7b090 netfilter: ctnetlink: deliver events for conntracks changed from userspace
As for now, the creation and update of conntracks via ctnetlink do not
propagate an event to userspace. This can result in inconsistent situations
if several userspace processes modify the connection tracking table by means
of ctnetlink at the same time. Specifically, using the conntrack command
line tool and conntrackd at the same time can trigger unconsistencies.

This patch also modifies the event cache infrastructure to pass the
process PID and the ECHO flag to nfnetlink_send() to report back
to userspace if the process that triggered the change needs so.
Based on a suggestion from Patrick McHardy.

Pablo Neira Ayuso 226c0c0ef2 netfilter: ctnetlink: helper modules load-on-demand support
This patch adds module loading for helpers via ctnetlink.

* Creation path: We support explicit and implicit helper assignation. For
  the explicit case, we try to load the module. If the module is correctly
  loaded and the helper is present, we return EAGAIN to re-start the
  creation. Otherwise, we return EOPNOTSUPP.
* Update path: release the spin lock, load the module and check. If it is
  present, then return EAGAIN to re-start the update.

This patch provides a refactorized function to lookup-and-set the
connection tracking helper. The function removes the exported symbol
__nf_ct_helper_find as it has not clients anymore.

This patch modifies xt_NFLOG to suppress the call to nf_log_packet()
function. The call of this wrapper in xt_NFLOG was causing NFLOG to
use the first initialized module. Thus, if ipt_ULOG is loaded before
nfnetlink_log all NFLOG rules are treated as plain LOG rules.

Alexey Dobriyan 61e5744849 netfilter: nf_conntrack_proto_gre: switch to register_pernet_gen_subsys()
register_pernet_gen_device() can't be used is nf_conntrack_pptp module is
also used (compiled in or loaded).

Right now, proto_gre_net_exit() is called before nf_conntrack_pptp_net_exit().
The former shutdowns and frees GRE piece of netns, however the latter
absolutely needs it to flush keymap. Oops is inevitable.

Switch to shiny new register_pernet_gen_subsys() to get correct ordering in
netns ops list.

Some code here depends on CONFIG_KMOD to not try to load
protocol modules or similar, replace by CONFIG_MODULES
where more than just request_module depends on CONFIG_KMOD

Jason Baron 346e15beb5 driver core: basic infrastructure for per-module dynamic debug messages
Base infrastructure to enable per-module debug messages.

I've introduced CONFIG_DYNAMIC_PRINTK_DEBUG, which when enabled centralizes
control of debugging statements on a per-module basis in one /proc file,
currently, <debugfs>/dynamic_printk/modules. When, CONFIG_DYNAMIC_PRINTK_DEBUG,
is not set, debugging statements can still be enabled as before, often by
defining 'DEBUG' for the proper compilation unit. Thus, this patch set has no
affect when CONFIG_DYNAMIC_PRINTK_DEBUG is not set.

The infrastructure currently ties into all pr_debug() and dev_dbg() calls. That
is, if CONFIG_DYNAMIC_PRINTK_DEBUG is set, all pr_debug() and dev_dbg() calls
can be dynamically enabled/disabled on a per-module basis.

Future plans include extending this functionality to subsystems, that define 
their own debug levels and flags.

Usage:

Dynamic debugging is controlled by the debugfs file, 
<debugfs>/dynamic_printk/modules. This file contains a list of the modules that
can be enabled. The format of the file is as follows:

	<module_name> <enabled=0/1>
		.
		.
		.

	<module_name> : Name of the module in which the debug call resides
	<enabled=0/1> : whether the messages are enabled or not

For example:

	snd_hda_intel enabled=0
	fixup enabled=1
	driver enabled=0

Enable a module:

	$echo "set enabled=1 <module_name>" > dynamic_printk/modules

Disable a module:

	$echo "set enabled=0 <module_name>" > dynamic_printk/modules

Enable all modules:

	$echo "set enabled=1 all" > dynamic_printk/modules

Disable all modules:

	$echo "set enabled=0 all" > dynamic_printk/modules

Finally, passing "dynamic_printk" at the command line enables
debugging for all modules. This mode can be turned off via the above
disable command.

Pablo Neira Ayuso e6a7d3c04f netfilter: ctnetlink: remove bogus module dependency between ctnetlink and nf_nat
This patch removes the module dependency between ctnetlink and
nf_nat by means of an indirect call that is initialized when
nf_nat is loaded. Now, nf_conntrack_netlink only requires
nf_conntrack and nfnetlink.

This patch puts nfnetlink_parse_nat_setup_hook into the
nf_conntrack_core to avoid dependencies between ctnetlink,
nf_conntrack_ipv4 and nf_conntrack_ipv6.

This patch also introduces the function ctnetlink_change_nat
that is only invoked from the creation path. Actually, the
nat handling cannot be invoked from the update path since
this is not allowed. By introducing this function, we remove
the useless nat handling in the update path and we avoid
deadlock-prone code.

This patch also adds the required EAGAIN logic for nfnetlink.

Linus noted a build failure case:

net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_xmit.c: In function 'ip_vs_tunnel_xmit':
net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_xmit.c:616: error: implicit declaration of function 'ip_select_ident'

The proper include file (net/ip.h) is being included in ip_vs_xmit.c to get
that declaration.  So the only possible case where this can happen is if
CONFIG_INET is not enabled.

This seems to be purely a missing dependency in the ipvs/Kconfig file IP_VS
entry.

Also, while we're here, remove the out of date "EXPERIMENTAL" string in the
IP_VS config help header line.  IP_VS no longer depends upon CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL

The function signatures for Xtables extensions have grown over time.
It involves a lot of typing/replication, and also a bit of stack space
even if they are not used. Realize an NFWS2008 idea and pack them into
structs. The skb remains outside of the struct so gcc can continue to
apply its optimizations.

This patch does this for match extensions' match functions.

A few ambiguities have also been addressed. The "offset" parameter for
example has been renamed to "fragoff" (there are so many different
offsets already) and "protoff" to "thoff" (there is more than just one
protocol here, so clarify).
