Haavard Skinnemoen 75d3521377 [PATCH] atmel_serial: Pass fixed register mappings through platform_data
In order to initialize the serial console early, the atmel_serial
driver had to do a hack where it compared the physical address of the
port with an address known to be permanently mapped, and used it as a
virtual address. This got around the limitation that ioremap() isn't
always available when the console is being initalized.

This patch removes that hack and replaces it with a new "regs" field
in struct atmel_uart_data that the board-specific code can initialize
to a fixed virtual mapping for platform devices where this is possible.
It also initializes the DBGU's regs field with the address the driver
used to check against.

On AVR32, the "regs" field is initialized from the physical base
address when this it can be accessed through a permanently 1:1 mapped
segment, i.e. the P4 segment.

If regs is NULL, the console initialization is delayed until the "real"
driver is up and running and ioremap() can be used.

Arnd Bergmann 3db03b4afb [PATCH] rename the provided execve functions to kernel_execve
Some architectures provide an execve function that does not set errno, but
instead returns the result code directly.  Rename these to kernel_execve to
get the right semantics there.  Moreover, there is no reasone for any of these
architectures to still provide __KERNEL_SYSCALLS__ or _syscallN macros, so
remove these right away.

Richard Purdie d14b272bc6 [ARM] 3848/1: pxafb: Add option of fixing video modes and spitz QVGA mode support
Add the ability to have pxafb use only certain fixed video modes
(selected on a per platform basis). This is useful on production
hardware such as the Zaurus cxx00 models where the valid modes are
known in advance and any other modes could result in hardware damage.

Following this, add support for the cxx00 QVGA mode. Mode information
is passed to the lcd_power call to allowing the panel drivers to
configure the display hardware accordingly (corgi_lcd already contains
the functionality for the cxx00 panel).

This mirrors the setup already used by w100fb.

Martin Schwidefsky ef6edc9746 [PATCH] Directed yield: cpu_relax variants for spinlocks and rw-locks
On systems running with virtual cpus there is optimization potential in
regard to spinlocks and rw-locks.  If the virtual cpu that has taken a lock
is known to a cpu that wants to acquire the same lock it is beneficial to
yield the timeslice of the virtual cpu in favour of the cpu that has the
lock (directed yield).

With CONFIG_PREEMPT="n" this can be implemented by the architecture without
common code changes.  Powerpc already does this.

With CONFIG_PREEMPT="y" the lock loops are coded with _raw_spin_trylock,
_raw_read_trylock and _raw_write_trylock in kernel/spinlock.c.  If the lock
could not be taken cpu_relax is called.  A directed yield is not possible
because cpu_relax doesn't know anything about the lock.  To be able to
yield the lock in favour of the current lock holder variants of cpu_relax
for spinlocks and rw-locks are needed.  The new _raw_spin_relax,
_raw_read_relax and _raw_write_relax primitives differ from cpu_relax
insofar that they have an argument: a pointer to the lock structure.

Atsushi Nemoto 3171a0305d [PATCH] simplify update_times (avoid jiffies/jiffies_64 aliasing problem)
Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390
timer interrupt handler with this change.

Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but
callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update.  Passing ticks
get rid of this redundant calculation.  Also there are another redundancy
pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky.

This cleanup make a barrier added by
5aee405c66 needless.  So this patch removes
it.

As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now
wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies.  (This patch does not really
remove wall_jiffies.  It would be another cleanup patch)

Andrew Victor 1f51c10c5e [ARM] 3870/1: AT91: Start removing static memory mappings
This patch removes the static memory mapping for the currently-unused
peripherals [Synchronous Serial, Timer/Counter unit], and for those
drivers that already ioremap() their registers [UART].

Also, the Ethernet driver now uses the platform_device resources but
doesn't yet use ioremap() so we need to pass it the virtual address
instead of the physical address.

David Brownell b2bbb20b37 USB: pxa2xx_udc understands GPIO based VBUS sensing
This updates the PXA 25x UDC board-independent infrastructure for VBUS sensing
and the D+ pullup.  The original code evolved from rather bizarre support on
Intel's "Lubbock" reference hardware, so that on more sensible hardware it
doesn't work as well as it could/should.

The change is just to teach the UDC driver how to use built-in PXA GPIO pins
directly.  This reduces the amount of board-specfic object code needed, and
enables the use of a VBUS sensing IRQ on boards (like Gumstix) that have one.
With VBUS sensing, the UDC is unclocked until a host is actually connected.

Hyok S. Choi f37f46eb1c [ARM] nommu: add ARM946E-S core support
This patch adds ARM946E-S core support which has typically 8KB I&D cache.
It has a MPU and supports ARMv5TE instruction set.

Because the ARM946E-S core can be synthesizable with various cache size,
CONFIG_CPU_DCACHE_SIZE is defined for vendor specific configurations.

George G. Davis 4052ebb7a2 [ARM] 3859/1: Fix devicemaps_init() XIP_KERNEL odd 1MiB XIP_PHYS_ADDR translation error
The ARM XIP_KERNEL map created in devicemaps_init() is wrong.
The map.pfn is rounded down to an even 1MiB section boundary
which results in va/pa translations errors when XIP_PHYS_ADDR
starts on an odd 1MiB boundary and this causes the kernel to
hang.  This patch fixes ARM XIP_KERNEL translation errors for
the odd 1MiB XIP_PHYS_ADDR boundary case.

Dave McCracken 46a82b2d55 [PATCH] Standardize pxx_page macros
One of the changes necessary for shared page tables is to standardize the
pxx_page macros.  pte_page and pmd_page have always returned the struct
page associated with their entry, while pte_page_kernel and pmd_page_kernel
have returned the kernel virtual address.  pud_page and pgd_page, on the
other hand, return the kernel virtual address.

Shared page tables needs pud_page and pgd_page to return the actual page
structures.  There are very few actual users of these functions, so it is
simple to standardize their usage.

Since this is basic cleanup, I am submitting these changes as a standalone
patch.  Per Hugh Dickins' comments about it, I am also changing the
pxx_page_kernel macros to pxx_page_vaddr to clarify their meaning.

Imre Deak f37e4580c4 ARM: OMAP2: Dynamic allocator for GPMC memory space
Add support for assigning memory regions dynamically to peripherals
attached to GPMC interface. Platform specific code should now call
gpmc_cs_request to get a free GPMC memory region instead of using
a fixed address.

Make the H4 and Apollon platform initialization use the new API.

Daniel Jacobowitz 6a39dd6222 [ARM] 3759/2: Remove uses of %?
Patch from Daniel Jacobowitz

The ARM kernel has several uses of asm("foo%?").  %? is a GCC internal
modifier used to output conditional execution predicates.  However, no
version of GCC supports conditionalizing asm statements.  GCC 4.2 will
correctly expand %? to the empty string in user asms.  Earlier versions may
reuse the condition from the previous instruction.  In 'if (foo) asm
("bar%?");' this is somewhat likely to be right... but not reliable.

So, the only safe thing to do is to remove the uses of %?.  I believe
the tlbflush.h occurances were supposed to be removed before, based
on the comment about %? not working at the top of that file.

Old versions of GCC could omit branches around user asms if the asm didn't
mark the condition codes as clobbered.  This problem hasn't been seen on any
recent (3.x or 4.x) GCC, but it could theoretically happen.  So, where
%? was removed a cc clobber was added.

Resolve ARM1136 VIPT non-aliasing cache coherency issues observed when
using ptrace to set breakpoints and cleanup copy_{to,from}_user_page()
while we're here as requested by Russell King because "it's also far
too heavy on non-v6 CPUs".

NOTES:

1. Only access_process_vm() calls copy_{to,from}_user_page().
2. access_process_vm() calls get_user_pages() to pin down the "page".
3. get_user_pages() calls flush_dcache_page(page) which ensures cache
   coherency between kernel and userspace mappings of "page".  However
   flush_dcache_page(page) may not invalidate I-Cache over this range
   for all cases, specifically, I-Cache is not invalidated for the VIPT
   non-aliasing case.  So memory is consistent between kernel and user
   space mappings of "page" but I-Cache may still be hot over this
   range.  IOW, we don't have to worry about flush_cache_page() before
   memcpy().
4. Now, for the copy_to_user_page() case, after memcpy(), we must flush
   the caches so memory is consistent with kernel cache entries and
   invalidate the I-Cache if this mm region is executable.  We don't
   need to do anything after memcpy() for the copy_from_user_page()
   case since kernel cache entries will be invalidated via the same
   process above if we access "page" again.  The flush_ptrace_access()
   function (borrowed from SPARC64 implementation) is added to handle
   cache flushing after memcpy() for the copy_to_user_page() case.

Ben Dooks 9a654518e1 [PATCH] drivers/rtc: fix rtc-s3c.c
In the cleanups of drivers/rtc/s3c-rtc.c, the base address for the
registers got broken.  This patch fixes that by ensuring the readb/writeb
are all prefixed with the base returned from ioremap()ing the registers.

Also fix check for valid year range, which was the wrong way around.

  - added waitforstop function

The patch also adds a S3C2410_DMAOP_STARTED for

Steven Rostedt 52393ccc0a [PATCH] remove set_wmb - arch removal
set_wmb should not be used in the kernel because it just confuses the
code more and has no benefit.  Since it is not currently used in the
kernel this patch removes it so that new code does not include it.

All archs define set_wmb(var, value) to do { var = value; wmb(); }
while(0) except ia64 and sparc which use a mb() instead.  But this is
still moot since it is not used anyway.

Hasn't been tested on any archs but x86 and x86_64 (and only compiled
tested)

Russell King dc5bc8f1e9 [ARM] Allow Versatile to be built for AB and PB
If a configuration was chosen to support both the Versatile
AB and PB boards, the result would write to registers not
available on the PB version of the board.  Resolve this by
using machine_is_xxx().

Also, for the CLCD, despite how the code looks, both the AB
and PB access the same location to control the clock rate -
it's just called something different between the two board
versions.  Invent our own name for this location and use it
unconditionally.

Switch the ARM irq core handling to the generic implementation. The
ARM specific header files now contain mostly migration stubs and
helper macros. Note that each machine type must be converted after
this step seperately. This was seperated out from the patch for easier
review.

The main changes for the machine type code is the conversion of the
type handlers to a 'type flow' and 'chip' model. This affects only the
multiplex interrupt handlers. A conversion macro needs to be added to
those implementations, which defines the data structure which is
registered by the set_irq_chained_handler() macro.

Some minor fixups of include files and the conversion of data
structure access is necessary all over the place.

The mostly macro based conversion was provided to allow an easy
migration of the existing implementations.

The code compiles on all defconfigs available in arch/arm/configs
except those which were broken also before applying the conversion
patches.

The code has been boot and runtime tested on most ARM platforms. The
results of an extensive testing and bugfixing series can be found

Catherine Zhang 877ce7c1b3 [AF_UNIX]: Datagram getpeersec
This patch implements an API whereby an application can determine the
label of its peer's Unix datagram sockets via the auxiliary data mechanism of
recvmsg.

Patch purpose:

This patch enables a security-aware application to retrieve the
security context of the peer of a Unix datagram socket.  The application
can then use this security context to determine the security context for
processing on behalf of the peer who sent the packet.

Patch design and implementation:

The design and implementation is very similar to the UDP case for INET
sockets.  Basically we build upon the existing Unix domain socket API for
retrieving user credentials.  Linux offers the API for obtaining user
credentials via ancillary messages (i.e., out of band/control messages
that are bundled together with a normal message).  To retrieve the security
context, the application first indicates to the kernel such desire by
setting the SO_PASSSEC option via getsockopt.  Then the application
retrieves the security context using the auxiliary data mechanism.

An example server application for Unix datagram socket should look like this:

sock_setsockopt is enhanced with a new socket option SOCK_PASSSEC to allow
a server socket to receive security context of the peer.

Testing:

We have tested the patch by setting up Unix datagram client and server
applications.  We verified that the server can retrieve the security context
using the auxiliary data mechanism of recvmsg.

Russell King ff0daca525 [ARM] Add section support to ioremap
Allow section mappings to be setup using ioremap() and torn down
with iounmap().  This requires additional support in the MM
context switch to ensure that mappings are properly synchronised
when mapped in.

Based an original implementation by Deepak Saxena, reworked and

Russell King 8799ee9f49 [ARM] Set bit 4 on section mappings correctly depending on CPU
On some CPUs, bit 4 of section mappings means "update the
cache when written to".  On others, this bit is required to
be one, and others it's required to be zero.  Finally, on
ARMv6 and above, setting it turns on "no execute" and prevents
speculative prefetches.

With all these combinations, no one value fits all CPUs, so we
have to pick a value depending on the CPU type, and the area
we're mapping.

Remove fault-armv.o, mmap.o and mm-armv.o from uclinux builds - these
are concerned with MMU-ful operations, and as such are redundant for
uclinux.

Since this also removes iotable_init() and iotable_init() is used
extensively in the platform support files, just make it a no-op.

Russell King 9641c7cc5a [ARM] nommu: uaccess tweaks
MMUless systems have only one address space for all threads, so
both the usual access_ok() checks, and the exception handling do
not make much sense.

Hence, discard the fixup and exception tables at link time, use
memcpy/memset for the user copy/clearing functions, and define
the permission check macros to be constants.

Some of this patch was derived from the equivalent patch by
Hyok S. Choi.

Russell King 002547b4f8 [ARM] nommu: adjust headers for !MMU ARM systems
Majorily based on Hyok Choi's patches, this fixes up the asm-arm
header files for mmuless systems.  Over and above Hyok's patches:

- nommu.h merged into mmu.h (it's only a structure)
- nommu_context.h is essentially the same as mmu_context.h, but
  without the MM switching code.

so there's no point having separate files.  Also, in memory.h,
there's no point #ifndef'ing PHYS_OFFSET and END_MEM - both
CONFIG_DRAM_BASE and CONFIG_DRAM_SIZE will always be set by the
configuration scripts.

Other files have minor formatting changes, but are essentially
the same.  Hyok's original patches were signed off thusly:

ixp23xx was including asm/hardware.h in its version of uncompress.h,
to get at the physical address of the debug UART, but this include was

decompressor, defined in headers in include/asm-arm/arch-ixp23xx, to

Include asm/arch/ixp23xx.h instead, and move the sole inline function
in ixp23xx.h to another header.

struct rt_sigframe into struct ucontext.  Also allow space for glibc's

reference.  Include the size of the coprocessor data in the magic numbers.

Also define magic numbers and layout for VFP, not yet saved.

Bjorn Helgaas 4f1bcaf094 [PATCH] vgacon: make VGA_MAP_MEM take size, remove extra use
VGA_MAP_MEM translates to ioremap() on some architectures.  It makes sense
to do this to vga_vram_base, because we're going to access memory between
vga_vram_base and vga_vram_end.

But it doesn't really make sense to map starting at vga_vram_end, because
we aren't going to access memory starting there.  On ia64, which always has
to be different, ioremapping vga_vram_end gives you something completely
incompatible with ioremapped vga_vram_start, so vga_vram_size ends up being
nonsense.

As a bonus, we often know the size up front, so we can use ioremap()
correctly, rather than giving it a zero size.

Russell King d6551e884c [ARM] Add thread_notify infrastructure
Some machine classes need to allow VFP support to be built into the
kernel, but still allow the kernel to run even though VFP isn't
present.  Unfortunately, the kernel hard-codes VFP instructions
into the thread switch, which prevents this being run-time selectable.

Solve this by introducing a notifier which things such as VFP can
hook into to be informed of events which affect the VFP subsystem
(eg, creation and destruction of threads, switches between threads.)

Andrew Victor 907d6deb62 [ARM] 3605/1: AT91RM9200 Power Management

This patch adds the core Power Management support for the AT91RM9200
processor.  It will support suspend-to-RAM and standby modes.

The suspend-to-RAM functionality is not 100% complete.  The code that
needs to be execute from the internal SRAM to restore the system is
outstanding.  For now we just fall through to Standby mode.

The AT91-specific at91_suspend_entering_slow_clock() function will
eventually be replaced by clk_must_disable() once that functionality is
added to mainline clock API.

Using the low-level debug routines early in the
kernel debug cause the 1:1 mapping to get into
the TLB, which is not flushed until after the
CPU detection process (which needs the GPIO VA).

This patch moves the VA for the GPIO to the
same offset as the physical offset of the UART
to the GPIO.

Lennert Buytenhek a77bc69138 [ARM] 3539/1: ixp23xx: fix __arch_ixp23xx_is_coherent() for A1 stepping

The current __ixp23xx_arch_is_coherent() check assumes that the
lower byte of IXP23XX_PRODUCT_ID is identical to the lower byte of
processor_id, but this is not the case, and because of this we were
incorrectly enabling coherency on A1 stepping CPUs.

Stepping A1 of the ixp2350, which has a PRODUCT_ID of 0x401, has '02'
in the lower byte of processor_id, while A2, with a PRODUCT_ID of
0x402, has '04' in the lower byte of processor_id.

So, to check for >= A2, we really need to check the lower byte of
processor_id against >= 4.

- Added locking to interface between the pump_messages workqueue and the
  pump_transfers tasklet.

use of the PCI interface by moving the CONFIG_PCI symbol selection to

building !PCI, this will drastically shrink the kernel size.

Yasunori Goto c80d79d746 [PATCH] Configurable NODES_SHIFT
Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for
each arch.  Its definition is sometimes configurable.  Indeed, ia64 defines 5
NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree.  But it looks a bit messy.

SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has
been changeable by config.  Suitable node's number may be changed in the
future even if it is other architecture.  So, I wrote configurable node's
number.

This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi
nodes except ia64.  But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary.

On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2
config.  But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too.  So, I
changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT.  It
would be simpler.

The debug-8250 macros do byte accesses, which means that if we're in
big-endian mode, we need to logically OR the UART address with 3, as
the LSB byte lane (where UART data and status is transferred) has the
highest byte address in the word when we are in big-endian mode.

This macro calculate page offset in a node.

Pavel Pisa 56ca904053 [ARM] 3457/1: i.MX: SD/MMC support for i.MX/MX1
Patch from Pavel Pisa

This patch adds support of i.MX/MX1 SD/MMC controller.
It has been significantly redesigned from the original Sascha Hauer's
version to support scatter-gather DMA, to conform to latest Pierre Ossman's
and Russell King's MMC-SD Linux 2.6.x infrastructure.
The handling of all events has been moved to the softirq context
and is designed with no busy-looping in mind. Unfortunately
some controller bugs has to be overcome by limited looping
about 2-20 usec but these are observed only for initial card
recognition phase.

There are still some missing/missed IRQs problems under heavy load.
Help of somebody with access to the full SDHC design information
is probably necessary.

Regenerated against 2.6.16-git-060402 to solve clash with other patches.

Lennert Buytenhek 23759dc643 [ARM] 3439/2: xsc3: add I/O coherency support
Patch from Lennert Buytenhek

This patch adds support for the I/O coherent cache available on the
xsc3.  The approach is to provide a simple API to determine whether the
chipset supports coherency by calling arch_is_coherent() and then
setting the appropriate system memory PTE and PMD bits.  In addition,
we call this API on dma_alloc_coherent() and dma_map_single() calls.
A generic version exists that will compile out all the coherency-related
code that is not needed on the majority of ARM systems.

Note that we do not check for coherency in the dma_alloc_writecombine()
function as that still requires a special PTE setting.  We also don't
touch dma_mmap_coherent() as that is a special ARM-only API that is by
definition only used on non-coherent system.

On the Double Espresso board, the IXP2350s are PCI slave devices and
we skip calling pci_common_init() as that enumerates the bus.  But even
though we are a PCI slave device, there is still some PCI-related setup
that has to be done.

Create ixp23xx_pci_common_init(), move the common initialisation bits
there, and have this function called from both the PCI master and the
PCI slave init path.

Richard Purdie 2c0f5fb08e [PATCH] backlight: corgi_bl: Generalise to support other Sharp SL hardware
Generalise the Corgi backlight driver by moving the default intensity and
limit mask settings into the platform specific data structure.  This enables
the driver to support other Zaurus hardware, specifically the SL-6000x (Tosa)
model.

Also change the spinlock to a mutex (the spinlock is overkill).

Switch Fabric unit almost identical to the one on the ixp2400, two

ADI Engineering Roadrunner, Intel IXDP2351, and IP Fabrics Double
Espresso platforms.

Lennert Buytenhek 23bdf86aa0 [ARM] 3377/2: add support for intel xsc3 core

This patch adds support for the new XScale v3 core.  This is an
ARMv5 ISA core with the following additions:

- L2 cache
- I/O coherency support (on select chipsets)
- Low-Locality Reference cache attributes (replaces mini-cache)
- Supersections (v6 compatible)
- 36-bit addressing (v6 compatible)
- Single instruction cache line clean/invalidate
- LRU cache replacement (vs round-robin)

I attempted to merge the XSC3 support into proc-xscale.S, but XSC3
cores have separate errata and have to handle things like L2, so it
is simpler to keep it separate.

L2 cache support is currently a build option because the L2 enable
bit must be set before we enable the MMU and there is no easy way to
capture command line parameters at this point.

There are still optimizations that can be done such as using LLR for
copypage (in theory using the exisiting mini-cache code) but those
can be addressed down the road.

Lennert Buytenhek c9b4470e2d [ARM] 3414/1: ep93xx: reset ethernet controller before uncompressing

The Redboot version that cirrus supplies for the cirrus ep93xx doesn't
turn off DMA from the ethernet MAC before jumping to linux, which means
that we might end up with bits of RX status and packet data scribbled
over the uncompressed kernel image.

Work around this by resetting the ethernet MAC before we uncompress.

We don't usually work around bootloader bugs, but considering that the
large majority of ep93xx boards out there have this problem, I figured
this it was justified in this case.

Davide Libenzi f348d70a32 [PATCH] POLLRDHUP/EPOLLRDHUP handling for half-closed devices notifications
Implement the half-closed devices notifiation, by adding a new POLLRDHUP
(and its alias EPOLLRDHUP) bit to the existing poll/select sets.  Since the
existing POLLHUP handling, that does not report correctly half-closed
devices, was feared to be changed, this implementation leaves the current
POLLHUP reporting unchanged and simply add a new bit that is set in the few
places where it makes sense.  The same thing was discussed and conceptually
agreed quite some time ago:

Since this new event bit is added to the existing Linux poll infrastruture,
even the existing poll/select system calls will be able to use it.  As far
as the existing POLLHUP handling, the patch leaves it as is.  The
pollrdhup-2.6.16.rc5-0.10.diff defines the POLLRDHUP for all the existing
archs and sets the bit in the six relevant files.  The other attached diff
is the simple change required to sys/epoll.h to add the EPOLLRDHUP
definition.

There is "a stupid program" to test POLLRDHUP delivery here:

Currently, if the kernels HZ value is greater than 100, delays with the udelay function are too short. This can cause trouble for instance with the zd1201 usb wlan driver.

This patch suggests a solution that keeps the overhead small and maintains (hopefully) sufficient resolution.

Russell King 411ef7f4cf [ARM] Remove asm/arch/irq.h
asm/arch/irq.h used to be included from asm/irq.h, but was removed
from the ARM kernel a long time ago.  Consequently, the contents
of asm/arch/irq.h (which mostly contain a definition for fixup_irq())
have not been used.  Hence, remove asm/arch/irq.h.

Some machine support files incorrectly included this file, making
little or no use of the contents.  Move the contents to a local
include file, and remove those include statements as well.

Chapter B2.7.3 in the latest ARM ARM (with v6 information) states that
the completion of a TLB maintenance operation is only guaranteed by
the execution of a DSB (Data Syncronization Barrier, formerly Data
Write Barrier or Drain Write Buffer).

Note that a DSB is only needed in the flush_tlb_kernel_* functions
since the completion is guaranteed by a mode change (i.e. switching
back to user mode) for the flush_tlb_user_* functions.

This patch adds the at91_set_multi_drive() function to enable/disable
the multi-drive (open collector) pin capability on the AT91RM9200
processor.

This is necessary to fix the UDC (USB Gadget) driver for the AT91RM9200
board as it will not allow the board reset line to be pulled low if the
pullup is not driven as an open collector output as the boards are wired
to the USB connector on both the DK/EK.

This version of the patch updates it to 2.6.16-rc4.

Michael S. Tsirkin f822566165 [PATCH] madvise MADV_DONTFORK/MADV_DOFORK
Currently, copy-on-write may change the physical address of a page even if the
user requested that the page is pinned in memory (either by mlock or by
get_user_pages).  This happens if the process forks meanwhile, and the parent
writes to that page.  As a result, the page is orphaned: in case of
get_user_pages, the application will never see any data hardware DMA's into
this page after the COW.  In case of mlock'd memory, the parent is not getting
the realtime/security benefits of mlock.

In particular, this affects the Infiniband modules which do DMA from and into
user pages all the time.

This patch adds madvise options to control whether memory range is inherited
across fork.  Useful e.g.  for when hardware is doing DMA from/into these
pages.  Could also be useful to an application wanting to speed up its forks
by cutting large areas out of consideration.

Nicolas Pitre 3f2829a315 [ARM] 3105/4: ARM EABI: new syscall entry convention

For a while we wanted to change the way syscalls were called on ARM.
Instead of encoding the syscall number in the swi instruction which
requires reading back the instruction from memory to extract that number
and polluting the data cache, it was decided that simply storing the
syscall number into r7 would be more efficient. Since this represents
an ABI change then making that change at the same time as EABI support
is the right thing to do.

It is now expected that EABI user space binaries put the syscall number
into r7 and use "swi 0" to call the kernel. Syscall register argument
are also expected to have "EABI arrangement" i.e. 64-bit arguments
should be put in a pair of registers from an even register number.

Example with long ftruncate64(unsigned int fd, loff_t length):

	legacy ABI:
	- put fd into r0
	- put length into r1-r2
	- use "swi #(0x900000 + 194)" to call the kernel

	new ARM EABI:
	- put fd into r0
	- put length into r2-r3 (skipping over r1)
	- put 194 into r7
	- use "swi 0" to call the kernel

Note that it is important to use 0 for the swi argument as backward
compatibility with legacy ABI user space relies on this.
The syscall macros in asm-arm/unistd.h were also updated to support
both ABIs and implement the right call method automatically.

The ARM EABI says that the stack pointer has to be 64-bit aligned for
reasons already mentioned in patch #3101 when calling C functions.

We therefore must verify and adjust sp accordingly when taking an
exception from kernel mode since sp might not necessarily be 64-bit
aligned if the exception occurs in the middle of a kernel function.

If the exception occurs while in user mode then no sp fixup is needed as
long as sizeof(struct pt_regs) as well as any additional syscall data
stack space remain multiples of 8.

Nicolas Pitre da2b1cd619 [ARM] 3101/1: ARM EABI: slab memory must be 64-bit aligned

Although ARM is still using 32-bit pointers, version 5 and later
versions of the ARM architecture introduced the ldrd and strd
instructions to move 64-bit data which must be 64-bit aligned in memory,
and the EABI includes new constraints on structure data alignment to
allow for the compiler to use those instructions. This means that any
slab allocation must start on a 64-bit boundary which is not equivalent
to BYTES_PER_WORD, especially on those architecture versions that
implements the ldrd/strd instructions.

Overriding the default alignment disables some slab debug features. If
those debug features are really needed then the kernel will have to be
compiled for version 4 of the ARM architecture.

For the ixp2000 netdev driver, we need to map in a chunk of SRAM (to
store the transmit and receive descriptors) and the scratch get/put
area (so that we can use the scratchpad rings in the cpu for managing
the descriptors.)  These are the final two mappings needed for the
netdev driver and the last missing piece for the driver in mainline
to work.

Deepak Saxena 9d4ae7276a [ARM] 3070/2: Add __ioremap_pfn() API

In working on adding 36-bit addressed supersection support to ioremap(),
I came to the conclusion that it would be far simpler to do so by just
splitting __ioremap() into a main external interface and adding an
__ioremap_pfn() function that takes a pfn + offset into the page that
__ioremap() can call. This way existing callers of __ioremap() won't have
to change their code and 36-bit systems will just call __ioremap_pfn()
and we will not have to deal with unsigned long long variables.

Note that __ioremap_pfn() should _NOT_ be called directly by drivers
but is reserved for use by arch_ioremap() implementations that map
32-bit resource regions into the real 36-bit address and then call
this new function.

Russell King 9ded96f24c [PATCH] IRQ type flags
Some ARM platforms have the ability to program the interrupt controller to
detect various interrupt edges and/or levels.  For some platforms, this is
critical to setup correctly, particularly those which the setting is dependent
on the device.

Currently, ARM drivers do (eg) the following:

	err = request_irq(irq, ...);

	set_irq_type(irq, IRQT_RISING);

However, if the interrupt has previously been programmed to be level sensitive
(for whatever reason) then this will cause an interrupt storm.

Hence, if we combine set_irq_type() with request_irq(), we can then safely set
the type prior to unmasking the interrupt.  The unfortunate problem is that in
order to support this, these flags need to be visible outside of the ARM
architecture - drivers such as smc91x need these flags and they're
cross-architecture.

Finally, the SA_TRIGGER_* flag passed to request_irq() should reflect the
property that the device would like.  The IRQ controller code should do its
best to select the most appropriate supported mode.

Christoph Lameter d3cb487149 [PATCH] atomic_long_t & include/asm-generic/atomic.h V2
Several counters already have the need to use 64 atomic variables on 64 bit
platforms (see mm_counter_t in sched.h).  We have to do ugly ifdefs to fall
back to 32 bit atomic on 32 bit platforms.

The VM statistics patch that I am working on will also make more extensive
use of atomic64.

This patch introduces a new type atomic_long_t by providing definitions in
asm-generic/atomic.h that works similar to the c "long" type.  Its 32 bits
on 32 bit platforms and 64 bits on 64 bit platforms.

Also cleans up the determination of the mm_counter_t in sched.h.

Badari Pulavarty f6b3ec238d [PATCH] madvise(MADV_REMOVE): remove pages from tmpfs shm backing store
Here is the patch to implement madvise(MADV_REMOVE) - which frees up a
given range of pages & its associated backing store.  Current
implementation supports only shmfs/tmpfs and other filesystems return
-ENOSYS.

"Some app allocates large tmpfs files, then when some task quits and some
client disconnect, some memory can be released.  However the only way to
release tmpfs-swap is to MADV_REMOVE". - Andrea Arcangeli

Databases want to use this feature to drop a section of their bufferpool
(shared memory segments) - without writing back to disk/swap space.

This feature is also useful for supporting hot-plug memory on UML.

Concerns raised by Andrew Morton:

- "We have no plan for holepunching!  If we _do_ have such a plan (or
  might in the future) then what would the API look like?  I think
  sys_holepunch(fd, start, len), so we should start out with that."

- Using madvise is very weird, because people will ask "why do I need to
  mmap my file before I can stick a hole in it?"

- None of the other madvise operations call into the filesystem in this
  manner.  A broad question is: is this capability an MM operation or a
  filesytem operation?  truncate, for example, is a filesystem operation
  which sometimes has MM side-effects.  madvise is an mm operation and with
  this patch, it gains FS side-effects, only they're really, really
  significant ones."

Comments:

- Andrea suggested the fs operation too but then it's more efficient to
  have it as a mm operation with fs side effects, because they don't
  immediatly know fd and physical offset of the range.  It's possible to
  fixup in userland and to use the fs operation but it's more expensive,
  the vmas are already in the kernel and we can use them.

Short term plan &  Future Direction:

- We seem to need this interface only for shmfs/tmpfs files in the short
  term.  We have to add hooks into the filesystem for correctness and
  completeness.  This is what this patch does.

- In the future, plan is to support both fs and mmap apis also.  This
  also involves (other) filesystem specific functions to be implemented.

- Current patch doesn't support VM_NONLINEAR - which can be addressed in
  the future.

Jared Hulbert 5b2e98cdf3 [ARM] 3206/1: Modifications to the bus arbiter controller for the Intel PXA27x

The following patch changes the bus arbiter controller settings
for the Intel PXA27x Application Processor Family.  Up to 5%
better video performance.  It parks the bus on the core while not
in use and sets the arbitration for other bus items.  The patch
only applies changes to the Intel Mainstone development platform.

This patch is not compatible with preproduction Intel PXA27x
silicon.

Deepak Saxena 54e269ead6 [ARM] 3226/1: IXP4xx runtime expansion bus window size configuration
Patch from Deepak Saxena

The expansion bus on the IXP46x NPU can be configured for either 32MiB or
16MiB windows and changing the configuration causes the base address for
each chip select for each region to change. Because of this, we cannot
hardcode the physical base as we currently do. This patch checks the
expansion bus configuration registers at runtime to determine the
appropriate window size. Note that this requires that the bootloader
already configured the device sizes appropriately, but I feel that is
valid assumption to make as the bootloader must configure and access
the flash window, the output display (LCD, LEDs, etc) window, and
other expansion bus devices.

Richard Purdie b7557de41a [ARM] 3228/1: SharpSL: Move PM code to arch/arm/common

arch/arm/common so that it can be reused on other devices such as the

Richard Purdie 81f280e22f [PATCH] USB: pxa27x OHCI - Separate platform code from main driver
To allow multiple platforms to use the PXA27x OHCI driver, the platform
code needs to be moved into the board specific files in
arch/arm/mach-pxa. This patch does this for mainstone and adds
preliminary hooks to allow other boards to use the driver.

This has been compile tested for mainstone and successfully run on Spitz
(Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000) with the addition of an appropriate board
support file.

In its interrupt handler, the (NAPI) ixp2000 netdev driver needs to use
the masked thread interrupt status register (instead of the raw one) to
prevent scheduling polling when polling is already running when a TXdone
interrupt comes in.  The definitions for the masked status registers were
not in yet, so this patch adds them.

Rod Whitby 3145d8a6cc [ARM] 3215/1: Iomega NAS 100d (MACH_NAS100D) machine support

This patch adds support for a new arm/ixp4xx machine - the Iomega NAS 100d network attached storage product.  The NAS100D is a consumer device containing a 266MHz Intel IXP420 processor, 16MB of flash, 64MB of RAM, a 160Gb internal IDE hard disk, and 802.11b/g wireless on an Atheros mini-PCI card.

Work on porting the latest 2.6.x kernel to this device is being done by
the NSLU2-Linux project (the same team who maintains the port to the
Linksys NSLU2 device).  In particular, the majority of this patch was
authored by Alessandro Zummo, based on the work done for MACH_NSLU2
support by the NSLU2-Linux core team of developers.

MACH_NAS100D (as implemented by this patch) can be enabled in jumbo
ixp4xx kernels without any affect on the other machines supported by
that kernel.

This patch applies cleanly against 2.6.15-rc7 and should be trivial to
apply to later kernel versions. It does not depend upon any other
patches.

Deepak Saxena f7e8bbb820 [ARM] 3192/1: Remove gpio_isr_line_clear() API from IXP4xx

Other than interrupt masking purposes, this API is only used when
configuring interrupt lines and this patch moves that functionality

Russell King 7cdad48297 [ARM] Remove '__address' from scatterlist and convert to DMA API
The old __address element in struct scatterlist remained from older
kernels because the ARM DMA emulation code made use of it.  Move
this field into struct dma_struct, and convert DMA emulation code
to setup a SG entry as required.

Also, convert DMA emulation code to use the new DMA API rather
than the PCI DMA API.

Russell King a8d3584a2d [ARM] Remove clk_use()/clk_unuse()
It seems that clk_use() and clk_unuse() are additional complexity
which isn't required anymore.  Remove them from the clock framework
to avoid the additional confusion which they cause, and update all
ARM machine types except for OMAP.
