Add basic type casting for arguments to perf probe. This allows
users to specify the actual type of arguments. Of course, if
user sets invalid types, kprobe-tracer rejects that.

Query the basic type information (byte-size and signed-flag) from
debuginfo and pass that to kprobe-tracer. This is especially useful
for tracing the members of data structure, because each member has
different byte-size on the memory.

Set the last field name to the argument name when the argument
is refering a data-structure member.
e.g.
./perf probe --add 'vfs_read file->f_mode'
Add new event:
probe:vfs_read (on vfs_read with f_mode=file->f_mode)
This probe records file->f_mode, but the argument name becomes "f_mode".
This enables perf-trace command to parse trace event format correctly.

Set given names to event arguments. The syntax is same as kprobe-tracer,
you can add 'NAME=' right before each argument.
e.g.

then, 'foo' is set to the argument name as below.

struct sort_entry has a callback named snprintf that turns an
entry into a string result.
But there are glibc versions that implement snprintf through a
macro. The following expression is then going to get the snprintf
call preprocessed:
ent->snprintf(...)
to finally end up in a build error:

To fix this, prepend struct sort_entry callbacks with an "se_"

Bypasses the tracing_data perf header code and replaces it with
a synthesized event and processing function that accomplishes
the same thing, used when reading/writing perf data to/from a
pipe.
The tracing data is pretty large, and this patch doesn't attempt
to break it down into component events. The tracing_data event
itself doesn't actually contain the tracing data, rather it
arranges for the event processing code to skip over it after
it's read, using the skip return value added to the event
processing loop in a previous patch.

This patch makes several changes to allow the perf event stream
to be sent and received over a pipe:
- adds pipe-specific versions of the header read/write code
- adds pipe-specific version of the event processing code
- adds a range of event types to be used for header or other
pseudo events, above the range used by the kernel
- checks the return value of event handlers, which they can use
to skip over large events during event processing rather than actually
reading them into event objects.
- unifies the multiple do_read() functions and updates its
users.
Note that none of these changes affect the existing perf data
file format or processing - this code only comes into play if
perf output is sent to stdout (or is read from stdin).

Parsing an option from the command line with OPT_BOOLEAN on a
bool data type would not work on a big-endian machine due to the
manner in which the boolean was being cast into an int and
incremented. For example, running 'perf probe --list' on a
PowerPC machine would fail to properly set the list_events bool
and would therefore print out the usage information and
terminate.
This patch makes OPT_BOOLEAN work as expected with a bool
datatype. For cases where the original OPT_BOOLEAN was
intentionally being used to increment an int each time it was
passed in on the command line, this patch introduces OPT_INCR
with the old behaviour of OPT_BOOLEAN (the verbose variable is
currently the only such example of this).
I have reviewed every use of OPT_BOOLEAN to verify that a true
C99 bool was passed. Where integers were used, I verified that
they were only being used for boolean logic and changed them to
bools to ensure that they would not be mistakenly used as ints.
The major exception was the verbose variable which now uses
OPT_INCR instead of OPT_BOOLEAN.

Currently util/string.c includes headers in this order: string.h, util.h
But this causes a build error because __USE_GNU definition
is needed for strndup() definition:

Now one can press the right arrow key and in addition to being able to
filter by DSO, filter out by thread too, or a combination of both
filters.
With this one can start collecting events for the whole system, then
focus on a subset of the collected data quickly.

Clicking on -> will bring as one of the popup menu options a "Zoom into
CURRENT DSO", i.e. CURRENT will be replaced by the name of the DSO in
the current line.
Choosing this option will filter out all samples that didn't took place
in a symbol in this DSO.
After that the option reverts to "Zoom out of CURRENT DSO", to allow
going back to the more compreensive view, not filtered by DSO.
Future similar operations will include zooming into a particular thread,
COMM, CPU, "last minute", "last N usecs", etc.

When we synthesize mmap events we need to fill in the pgoff field.
I wasn't able to test this completely since I couldn't find an
executable region with a non 0 offset. We will see it when we start
doing data profiling.

This is a fix to the signed/unsigned field handling in the
Python scripting engine, based on a patch from Roel Kluin.
Basically, Python wants to use a PyInt (which is internally a
long) if it can i.e. if the value will fit into that type. If
not, it stores it into a PyLong, which isn't actually a long,
but an arbitrary-precision integer variable.
The code below is similar to to what Python does internally, and
it seems to work as expected on the x86 and x86_64 sytems I
tested it on.

The struct callchain_node size is 120 bytes, that are never used when
there are no callchains or '-g none' is specified, so conditionally
allocate it, reducing sizeof(struct hist_entry) from 210 bytes to only
96, greatly speeding the non-callchain processing.

Due to the assumption in perf_session__new that the kernel maps would be
created using the fake PERF_RECORD_MMAP event in a perf.data file 'perf
kmem --stat caller', that doesn't have such event, ends up not being
able to resolve the kernel addresses.
Fix it by calling perf_session__create_kernel_maps() in __cmd_kmem().

Then hist_entry__fprintf will just us the newly introduced
hist_entry__snprintf, add the newline and fprintf it to the supplied
FILE descriptor.
This allows us to remove the use_browser checking in the color_printf
routines, that now got color_snprintf variants too.
The newt TUI browser (and other GUIs that may come in the future) don't
have to worry about stdio specific stuff in the strings they get from
the se->snprintf routines and instead use whatever means to do the
equivalent.
Also the newt TUI browser don't have to use the fmemopen() hack, instead
it can use the se->snprintf routines directly. For now tho use the
hist_entry__snprintf routine to reduce the patch size.

For when we are processing the events and inserting the entries in the
browser.
Experimentation here: naming "ui_something" we may be treading into
creating a TUI/GUI set of routines that can then be implemented in terms
of multiple backends.
Also the time it takes for adding things to the "browser" takes, visually
(I guess I should do some profiling here ;-) ), more time than for
processing the events...
That means we probably need to create a custom hist_entry browser, so
that we reuse the structures we have in place instead of duplicating
them in newt.
But progress was made and at least we can see something while long files
are being loaded, that must be one of UI 101 bullet points :-)

Tools need to know from which map in the map_group a symbol was resolved
to, so that, for isntance, we can annotate kernel modules symbols by

Thru series of refactorings functions were being renamed but not
moved to map.c to reduce patch noise, now lets have them in the
same place so that use of the symbol system by tools can be
constrained to building and linking fewer source files:
symbol.c, map.c and rbtree.c.

That will be in both struct hist_entry and struct
callchain_list, so that the TUI can store a pointer to the pair
(map, symbol) in the trees where hist_entries and
callchain_lists are present, to allow precise annotation instead
of looking for the first symbol with the selected name.

We were performing the full thread__find_addr_location
operation, i.e. resolving to a map/dso _and_ loading its symbols
when we can optimize it by first calling thread__find_addr_map
to find just the map/dso, check if it is one that we are
interested in (passed via --dsos/-d in 'perf annotate', 'perf
report', etc) and if not avoid loading the symtab.
Nice speedup when we know which DSO we're interested in.

Right now it presents a menu with these options:

If the highlighted (current) symbol is not annotatable only the
"Exit" option will appear.
Also add a confirmation dialog when ESC is pressed on the top
level to avoid exiting the application by pressing one too many
ESC key.
To get to the menu just press the -> (Right navigation key), to
exit just press ESC.

Starts collapsed, allows annotating by pressing 'A' or 'a' on
the symbol, be it the top level one or any of the symbols in the
chains.
It (ab)uses the only tree widget in newt, that is actually a
checkbox tree that we use with just one option ('.'), end result
is usable but we really need to create a custom widget tree so
that we can use the data structures we have (hist_entry rb_tree
+ callchain rb_tree + lists), so that we reduce the memory
footprint by not creating a mirror set of data structures in the
newtCheckboxTree widget.
Thanks to Frédéric Weisbacker for fixing the orphanage problem
in 301fde2, without that we were tripping a newt bug (fix
already sent to newt's maintainer).

1) Invert logic of NO_DWARF_SUPPORT to DWARF_SUPPORT.
2) For removing assymetric/local variable ifdefs, introduce

Callchains have markers inside their capture to tell we
enter a context (kernel, user, ...).
Those are not displayed in the callchains but they are
incidentally an active part of the radix tree where
callchains are stored, just like any other address.
If we have the two following callchains:
addr1 -> addr2 -> user context -> addr3
addr1 -> addr2 -> user context -> addr4
addr1 -> addr2 -> addr 5
This is pretty common if addr1 and addr2 are part of an
interrupt path, addr3 and addr4 are user addresses and
addr5 is a kernel non interrupt path.
This will be stored as follows in the tree:
addr1
addr2
/ \
/ addr5
user context
/ \
addr3 addr4
But we ignore the context markers in the report, hence
the addr3 and addr4 will appear as orphan branches:

Parameter --pid (or -p) of perf currently means a thread-wide
collection. For exmaple, if a process whose id is 8888 has 10
threads, 'perf top -p 8888' just collects the main thread
statistics. That's misleading. Users are used to attach a whole
process when debugging a process by gdb. To follow normal usage
style, the patch change --pid to process-wide collection and add
--tid (-t) to mean a thread-wide collection.
Usage example is:
# perf top -p 8888
# perf record -p 8888 -f sleep 10
# perf stat -p 8888 -f sleep 10
Above commands collect the statistics of all threads of process
8888.

Fix the !drawf build.
This uses the existing NO_DWARF_SUPPORT mechanism we use for that,
but it's really fragile and needs a cleanup. (in a separate patch)
1) Such uses:

are double inverted logic a'la 'not not'. Instead the flag should
be called DWARF_SUPPORT.
2) Furthermore, assymetric #ifdef polluted code flow like:

Support accessing members in the data structures. With this,
perf-probe accepts data-structure members(IOW, it now accepts
dot '.' and arrow '->' operators) as probe arguemnts.
e.g.
./perf probe --add 'schedule:44 rq->curr'
./perf probe --add 'vfs_read file->f_op->read file->f_path.dentry'
Note that '>' can be interpreted as redirection in command-line.

Rename die_get_real_subprogram and die_get_inlinefunc to
die_find_real_subprogram and die_find_inlinefunc respectively,
because these functions search its children. After that,
'die_get_' means getting a property of that die, and
'die_find_' means searching DIE-tree to get an appropriate
child die.

When profiling C++ workloads the symbol name length can be
really big, so cap it before it garbles the result.
This builds upon the autosizing already present where we choose
to use the short, basename of DSOs instead of its long, full
pathname.

Before this patch we would not find a vmlinux, then try to pass
objdump "[kernel.kallsyms]" as the filename, it would get
confused and produce no output:

This bug was introduced when we added automatic search for
vmlinux, before that time the user had to specify a vmlinux
file.
v2: Print the warning just for the first symbol found when no
symbol name is specified, otherwise it will spam the screen
repeating the warning for each symbol.

Before this patch this message would very briefly appear on the
screen and then the screen would get updates only on the top,
for number of interrupts received, etc, but no annotation would
be performed:

Fix probe_point array-size overrun problem. In some cases (e.g.
inline function), one user-specified probe-point can be
translated to many probe address, and it overruns pre-defined
array-size. This also removes redundant MAX_PROBES macro
definition.

Not good, the newt form for report works, but slang has to eat
the cost of the additional callgraph lines everytime it prints a
line, and the callgraph doesn't appear on the screen, so move
the callgraph printing to a separate function and don't use it
in newt.c.
Newt tree widgets are being investigated to properly support
callgraphs, but till that gets merged, lets remove this huge
overhead and show at least the symbol overheads for a callgraph
rich perf.data with good performance.

Newt has widespread availability and provides a rather simple
API as can be seen by the size of this patch.
The work needed to support it will benefit other frontends too.
In this initial patch it just checks if the output is a tty, if
not it falls back to the previous behaviour, also if
newt-devel/libnewt-dev is not installed the previous behaviour
is maintaned.
Pressing enter on a symbol will annotate it, ESC in the
annotation window will return to the report symbol list.
More work will be done to remove the special casing in
color_fprintf, stop using fmemopen/FILE in the printing of
hist_entries, etc.
Also the annotation doesn't need to be done via spawning "perf
annotate" and then browsing its output, we can do better by
calling directly the builtin-annotate.c functions, that would
then be moved to tools/perf/util/annotate.c and shared with perf
top, etc
But lets go by baby steps, this patch already improves perf
usability by allowing to quickly do annotations on symbols from
the report screen and provides a first experimentation with
libnewt/TUI integration of tools.
Tested on RHEL5 and Fedora12 X86_64 and on Debian PARISC64 to
browse a perf.data file collected on a Fedora12 x86_64 box.

At present, the perf subcommands that do system-wide monitoring
(perf stat, perf record and perf top) don't work properly unless
the online cpus are numbered 0, 1, ..., N-1. These tools ask
for the number of online cpus with sysconf(_SC_NPROCESSORS_ONLN)
and then try to create events for cpus 0, 1, ..., N-1.
This creates problems for systems where the online cpus are
numbered sparsely. For example, a POWER6 system in
single-threaded mode (i.e. only running 1 hardware thread per
core) will have only even-numbered cpus online.
This fixes the problem by reading the /sys/devices/system/cpu/online
file to find out which cpus are online. The code that does that is in
tools/perf/util/cpumap.[ch], and consists of a read_cpu_map()
function that sets up a cpumap[] array and returns the number of
online cpus. If /sys/devices/system/cpu/online can't be read or
can't be parsed successfully, it falls back to using sysconf to
ask how many cpus are online and sets up an identity map in cpumap[].
The perf record, perf stat and perf top code then calls
read_cpu_map() in the system-wide monitoring case (instead of
sysconf) and uses cpumap[] to get the cpu numbers to pass to
perf_event_open.

If -vv is used just the map table will be printed, -vvv will
print the symbol table too, with it we can see that we have a
bug where some samples are not being resolved to a map when we
get them in the perf.data stream, but after we have it all
processed, we can find the right map, some reordering probably
is happening.
Upcoming patches will provide ways to ask for most PERF_SAMPLE_
conditional samples to be taken for !PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE events
too, then we'll be able to ask for PERF_SAMPLE_TIME and
PERF_SAMPLE_CPU to help diagnose this.

Now that report can store historgrams for multiple events we
need to be able to do the post processing work for each
histogram. This patch changes the post processing functions so
that they can be called individually for each event's histogram.

Even though we don't register the counters until the child is right about
to exec(), we're still going to get at least a few events while the
fork()'d child is still executing 'perf' and in particular we're going to
get the MMAP events.
We can't distinguish the ones in the newly executed process because the
PID will be the same.
One way to solve this would be to have a PERF_RECORD_EXEC event, and when
this is seen 'perf' can flush it's map cache. We can't use
PERF_RECORD_COMM since that's generated by other things, not just exec().
Actually, thinking about it some more, using PERF_RECORD_COMM might be a
good enough approximation.

Add lazy line matching support for specifying new probes.
This also changes the syntax of perf probe a bit. Now
perf probe accepts one of below probe event definitions.
1) Define event based on function name
[EVENT=]FUNC[@SRC][:RLN|+OFF|%return|;PTN] [ARG ...]
2) Define event based on source file with line number
[EVENT=]SRC:ALN [ARG ...]
3) Define event based on source file with lazy pattern
[EVENT=]SRC;PTN [ARG ...]
- New lazy matching pattern(PTN) follows ';' (semicolon). And it
must be put the end of the definition.
- So, @SRC is no longer the part which must be put at the end
of the definition.
Note that ';' (semicolon) can be interpreted as the end of
a command by the shell. This means that you need to quote it.
(anyway you will need to quote the lazy pattern itself too,
because it may contains other sensitive characters, like
'[',']' etc.).
Lazy matching
-------------
The lazy line matching is similar to glob matching except
ignoring spaces in both of pattern and target.
e.g.
'a=*' can matches 'a=b', 'a = b', 'a == b' and so on.
This provides some sort of flexibility and robustness to
probe point definitions against minor code changes.
(for example, actual 10th line of schedule() can be changed
easily by modifying schedule(), but the same line matching
'rq=cpu_rq*' may still exist.)

Check (inlined) function address range strictly for
improving output of probe-able lines of inline functions.
Without this change, perf probe --line <function> sometimes
showed other inline function bodies too, because it didn't
filter out inlined functions.

Newer gcc introduces newer & richer debuginfo, and only libdw
in elfutils project can support it. So perf probe moves onto
elfutils-libdw from libdwarf.

Fix find_line_range_by_line() to init line_list and remove

Because symbol->end is not fixed up at symbol_filter time, only
after all symbols for a DSO are loaded, and that, for asm
symbols, may be bogus, causing segfaults when hits happen in
these symbols.

Clear struct probe_point before using it in
show_perf_probe_events(), and set pp->found counter correctly in
synthesize_perf_probe_point(). Without this initialization,
clear_probe_point() will free random addresses.

As the parent comm then is worthless, confusing users about the
thread where the sample really happened, leading to think that
the sample happened in the parent, not where it really happened,
in the children of a thread for which a PERF_RECORD_COMM event
was not received.

In 2161db9 we stopped failing when not finding modules when
asked too, but then the kernel maps (just one, for vmlinux)
wasn't having its ->end field correctly set up, so symbols were
not being found for the vmlinux map because its range was 0-0.

First, for programs and prelinked libraries, annotate code was
fooled by objdump output IPs (src->eip in the code) being
wrongly converted to absolute IPs. In such case there were no
conversion needed, but in
src->eip = strtoull(src->line, NULL, 16);
src->eip = map->unmap_ip(map, src->eip); // = eip + map->start - map->pgoff
we were reading absolute address from objdump (e.g. 8048604) and
then almost doubling it, because eip & map->start are
approximately close for small programs.
Needless to say, that later, in record_precise_ip() there was no
matching with real runtime IPs.
And second, like with `perf annotate` the problem with
non-prelinked *.so was that we were doing rip -> objdump address
conversion wrong.
Also, because unlike `perf annotate`, `perf top` code does
annotation based on absolute IPs for performance reasons(*), new
helper for mapping objdump addresse to IP is introduced.
(*) we get samples info in absolute IPs, and since we do lots of
hit-testing on absolute IPs at runtime in record_precise_ip(), it's
better to convert objdump addresses to IPs once and do no conversion
at runtime.
I also had to fix how objdump output is parsed (with hardcoded
8/16 characters format, which was inappropriate for ET_DYN dsos
with small addresses like '4ac')
Also note, that not all objdump output lines has associtated
IPs, e.g. look at source lines here:

The problem was we were incorrectly calculating objdump
addresses for sym->start and sym->end, look:
For simple ET_DYN type DSO (*.so) with one function, objdump -dS
output is something like this:

For ET_EXEC type and probably for prelinked libs as well (sorry
can't test - I don't use prelink) objdump outputs absolute IPs,

So, if sym->start is always relative to dso mapping(*), we'll
have to unmap it for ET_EXEC like cases, and leave as is for
ET_DYN cases.
(*) and it is - we've explicitely made it relative. Look for
adjust_symbols handling in dso__load_sym()
Previously we were always unmapping sym->start and for ET_DYN
dsos resulting addresses were wrong, and so objdump output was
empty.
The end result was that perf annotate output for symbols from
non-prelinked *.so had always 0.00% percents only, which is
wrong.
To fix it, let's introduce a helper for converting rip to
objdump address, and also let's document what map_ip() and
unmap_ip() do -- I had to study sources for several hours to
understand it.

We want to stream events as fast as possible to perf.data, and
also in the future we want to have splice working, when no
interception will be possible.
Using build_id__mark_dso_hit_ops to create the list of DSOs that
back MMAPs we also optimize disk usage in the build-id cache by
only caching DSOs that had hits.

We can check using strcmp, most DSOs don't start with '[' so the
test is cheap enough and we had to test it there anyway since
when reading perf.data files we weren't calling the routine that
created this global variable and thus weren't setting it as
"loaded", which was causing a bogus:
Failed to open [vdso], continuing without symbols
Message as the first line of 'perf report'.

While debugging a problem reported by Pekka Enberg by printing
the IP and all the maps for a thread when we don't find a map
for an IP I noticed that dso__load_sym needs to fixup these
extra maps it creates to hold symbols in different ELF sections
than the main kernel one.
Now we're back showing things like:

I noticed while writing the first test in 'perf regtest' that to
just test the symbol handling routines one needs to create a
perf session, that is a layer centered on a perf.data file,
events, etc, so I untied these layers.
This reduces the complexity for the users as the number of
parameters to most of the symbols and session APIs now was
reduced while not adding more state to all the map instances by
only having data that is needed to split the kernel (kallsyms
and ELF symtab sections) maps and do vmlinux relocation on the
main kernel map.

easily larger that 2G.

This patch is required to test the next patch for perf lock.
At 064739bc4b ,
support for the modifier "__data_loc" of format is added.
But, when I wanted to parse format of lock_acquired (or some
event else), raw_field_ptr() did not returned correct pointer.
So I modified raw_field_ptr() like this patch. Then
raw_field_ptr() works well.

Probably this wasn't noticed when testing this on my parisc
machine because I must have copied manually to its cache the
vmlinux file used in the x86_64 machine, now that I tried
looking on a x86-32 machine with a fresh cache, kernel symbols
weren't being resolved even with the right kallsyms copy on its
cache, duh.

For now it just has operations to examine a given file, find its
build-id and add or remove it to/from the cache.
Useful, for instance, when adding binaries sent together with a
perf.data file, so that we can add them to the cache and have
the tools find it when resolving symbols.
It'll also manage the size of the cache like 'ccache' does.

getline() is considered as undeclared in util/util.c because
it includes string.h, that in turn includes stdio.h, without
having defined _GNU_SOURCE.
But util.c also includes util.h that handles the _GNU_SOURCE and
all the needed inclusions already. Let's include only util.h
and sys/mman.h which is the only one header not handled by
util.h
This fixes the following build error:

Using this option 'perf buildid-list' will process all samples,
marking the DSOs that had some hits to list just them.
This in turn will be used by a new porcelain, 'perf archive',
that will be just a shell script to create a tarball from the
'perf buildid-list --with-hits' output and the files cached by
'perf record' in ~/.debug.

In the past 'perf record' had to process only userspace MMAP
events, the ones generated in the kernel, but after we reused
the MMAP events to encode the module mapings we ended up adding
them first to the list of userspace DSOs (dsos__user) and to the
kernel one (dsos__kernel).
Fix this by encoding the header.misc field and then using it,
like other parts to decide the right DSOs list to insert/find.
The gotcha here is that since the kernel puts zero in .misc,
which isn't PERF_RECORD_MISC_KERNEL (1 << 1), to differentiate,
we put 1 in .misc.

We were always looking at the running machine /proc/modules,
even when processing a perf.data file, which only makes sense
when we're doing 'perf record' and 'perf report' on the same
machine, and in close sucession, or if we don't use modules at
all, right Peter? ;-)
Now, at 'perf record' time we read /proc/modules, find the long
path for modules, and put them as PERF_MMAP events, just like we
did to encode the reloc reference symbol for vmlinux. Talking
about that now it is encoded in .pgoff, so that we can use
.{start,len} to store the address boundaries for the kernel so
that when we reconstruct the kmaps tree we can do lookups right
away, without having to fixup the end of the kernel maps like we
did in the past (and now only in perf record).
One more step in the 'perf archive' direction when we'll finally
be able to collect data in one machine and analyse in another.

Add --line option to support showing probable source-code lines.
perf probe --line SRC:LN[-LN|+NUM]
or
perf probe --line FUNC[:LN[-LN|+NUM]]
This option shows source-code with line number if the line can
be probed. Lines without line number (and blue color) means that
the line can not be probed, because debuginfo doesn't have the
information of those lines.
The argument specifies the range of lines, "source.c:100-120"
shows lines between 100th to l20th in source.c file. And
"func:10+20" shows 20 lines from 10th line of func function.

Support glob wildcard when selecting tracepoint events by -e
option. Without this patch, perf-tools supports 'GROUP:*:record'
syntax for selecting all tracepoints under GROUP group.
With this patch, user can choose tracepoints more flexibly by using
partial wildcards, e.g. 'block:*bio*:record'.

DSOs don't have this problem because the kernel emits a
PERF_MMAP for each new executable mapping it performs on
monitored threads.
To fix the kernel case we simulate the same behaviour, by having
'perf record' to synthesize a PERF_MMAP for the kernel, encoded
like this:

I.e. we identify such event as having:
.pid = 0
.filename = [kernel.kallsyms.REFNAME]
.start = REFNAME addr in /proc/kallsyms at 'perf record' time
and use now a hardcoded value of '.text' for REFNAME.
Then, later, in 'perf report', if there are any kernel hits and
thus we need to resolve kernel symbols, we search for REFNAME
and if its address changed, relocation happened and we thus must
change the kernel mapping routines to one that uses .pgoff as
the relocation to apply.
This way we use the same mechanism used for the other DSOs and
don't have to do a two pass in all the kernel symbols.

A few more optimizations for perf when dealing with directories.
Some of them significantly cut down the work which has to be
done. d_type should always be set; otherwise fix the kernel
code. And there are functions available to parse fstab-like
files, so use them.

Now a cache will be created in a ~/.debug debuginfo like
hierarchy, so that at the end of a 'perf record' session all the
binaries (with build-ids) involved get collected and indexed by
their build-ids, so that perf report can find them.
This is interesting when developing software where you want to
do a 'perf diff' with the previous build and opens avenues for
lots more interesting tools, like a 'perf diff --graph' that
takes more than two binaries into account.
Tunables for collecting just the symtabs can be added if one
doesn't want to have the full binary, but having the full binary
allows things like 'perf rerecord' or other tools that can
re-run the tests by having access to the exact binary in some
perf.data file, so it may well be interesting to keep the full
binary there.
Space consumption is minimised by trying to use hard links, a
'perf cache' tool to manage the space used, a la ccache is
required to purge older entries.
With this in place it will be possible also to introduce new
commands, 'perf archive' and 'perf restore' (or some more
suitable and future proof names) to create a cpio/tar file with
the perf data and the files in the cache that _had_ perf hits of
interest.
There are more aspects to polish, like finding the right vmlinux
file to cache, etc, but this is enough for a first step.

This is really something tools need to do before asking for the
events to be processed, leaving perf_session__process_events to
do just that, process events.
Also add a msg parameter to perf_session__has_traces() so that
the right message can be printed, fixing a regression added by
me in the previous cset (right timechart message) and also
fixing 'perf kmem', that was not asking if 'perf kmem record'
was ran.

Check new event name is same syntax as a C symbol in perf command.
In other words, checking the name is as like as other tracepoint
events.
This can prevent user to create an event with useless name (e.g.

This patch adds -I/usr/include/libdwarf to BASIC_CFLAGS

Fix perf probe to show which probe point is not found.
With out this patch, it shows just "No probe point found."
This doesn't help users if they specify several probes.
e.g.
# perf probe -f --add schedule --add test
Fatal: No probe point found.
This patch makes error message more helpful as below.
# perf probe --add schedule --add test

Check build-id of vmlinux by using functions in symbol.c.
This also exposes map__load() for getting vmlinux path,
and removes vmlinux path list in builtin-probe.c,
because symbol.c already has that. Checking build-id
prevents users to open old or different debuginfo from
current running kernel.

Support event name syntax for --add option. This allows
users to specify event name for each new event.
The --add syntax is:
perf probe --add '[EVENT=]SRC:LINE ARGS'
or
perf probe --add '[EVENT=]FUNC[+OFFS|%return|:RLN][@SRC] ARGS'
e.g.
./perf probe --add myprobe1=schedule
Note: currently group name is not supported yet, because it
can cause name-space confliction with other tracepoint/
hw-breakpoint events.

Clean up struct session in builtin-probe.c, including

One oversight of the original scripting_ops patch was a lack of
support for passing args to handler scripts. This adds
argc/argv to the start_script() scripting_op, and changes the
rw-by-file script to take 'comm' arg rather than the 'perf'
value currently hard-coded. It also takes the opportunity to do
some related minor cleanup.

There is still some more work to do to disentangle map creation
from DSO loading, but this happens only for the kernel, and for
the early adopters of perf diff, where this disentanglement
matters most, we'll be testing different kernels, so no problem
here.
Further clarification: right now we create the kernel maps for
the various modules and discontiguous kernel text maps when
loading the DSO, we should do it as a two step process, first
creating the maps, for multiple mappings with the same DSO
store, then doing the dso load just once, for the first hit on
one of the maps sharing this DSO backing store.

That does all the initialization boilerplate, opening the file,
reading the header, checking if it is valid, etc.
And that will as well have the threads list, kmap (now) global
variable, etc, so that we can handle two (or more) perf.data files
describing sessions to compare.

Configurable via symbol_conf.sort_by_name, so that the cost of an
extra rb_node on all 'struct symbol' instances is not paid by tools
that only want to decode addresses.

Looking over the vmlinux/kallsyms is common enough that I'll add a
variable to the upcoming struct perf_session to avoid the need to
use map_groups__find_by_name to get the main vmlinux/kallsyms map.
The above example looks on the 'variable' symtab, but it is just
like that for the functions one.
Also the sort operation is done when we first use
map__find_symbol_by_name, in a lazy way.

Using a struct thread instance just to hold the kernel space maps
(vmlinux + modules) is overkill and confuses people trying to
understand the perf symbols abstractions.
The kernel maps are really present in all threads, i.e. the kernel
is a library, not a separate thread.
So introduce the 'map_groups' abstraction and use it for the kernel
maps, now in the kmaps global variable.
It, in turn, will move, together with the threads list to the
perf_file abstraction, so that we can support multiple perf_file
instances, needed by perf diff.

Support perf probe --del <event> option. Currently,
perf probe can have only one event for each --del option.
If you'd like to delete several probe events, you need
to specify --del for each events.

Remove event suffix number _0 if it is the first.
The first event has no suffix, and from the second,
each event has suffix number counted from _1. This
reduces typing cost :-).

Change event list format for user readability. perf probe --list
shows event list in "[GROUP:EVENT] EVENT-DEFINITION" format, but
this format is different from the output of perf-list, and
EVENT-DEFINITION is a bit blunt. This patch changes the format to
more user friendly one.

Fix event namelist to duplicate string. Without duplicating, adding
multiple probes causes stack overwrite bug, because it reuses a
buffer on stack while the buffer is already added in the namelist.
String duplication solves this bug because only contents of the
buffer is copied to the namelist.

Uses of strcat are almost always signs that someone is too lazy
to think about the code a bit more carefully. One always has to
know about the lengths of the strings involved to avoid buffer
overflows.
This is one case where the size of the object code for me is
reduced by 38 bytes. The code should also be faster, especially
if flags is non-NULL.

"len" is aligned to 64. So, it tries to write the out of
long_name buffer.
So, this use "zero_buf" to write aligned area.
- util/trace-event-read.c
"size" is not including nul byte. So, this allocates it, and set '\0'.
- util/trace-event-parse.c
It needs parens to calc correct size.

Currently, sample event data is parsed for each commands, and it
is assuming that the data is not including other data. (E.g.
timechart, trace, etc. can't parse the event if it has
PERF_SAMPLE_CALLCHAIN)
So, even if we record the superset data for multiple commands at
a time, commands can't parse. etc.
To fix it, this makes common sample event parser, and use it to
parse sample event correctly. (PERF_SAMPLE_READ is unsupported
for now though, it seems to be not using.)

Simplify event naming as <symbol>_<seqnum>. Each event name is
globally unique (group name is not checked). So, if there is

Add --list option for listing currently defined probe events
in the kernel. This shows events in below format;
[group:event] <perf-probe probe-definition>
for example:
[probe:schedule_0] schedule+30 cpu
Note that source file/line information is not supported yet.
So even if you added a probe by line, it will be shown in
<symbol+offset>.

The Perl scripting support for perf trace allows most of a trace
event's data to be accessed directly as handler arguments, but
not all of it e.g. the less common fields aren't passed in. To
give scripts access to the other fields and/or any other data or
metadata in the main perf executable that might be useful, a way
to access the C data in perf from Perl is needed; this patch
uses the Perl XS facility to do it for the common_xxx event
fields not passed to handler functions.
Context.pm exports three functions to Perl scripts that access
fields for the current event by calling back into perf:
common_pc(), common_flags() and common_lock_depth(). Support
for common_flags() field values was added to Core.pm and a
script used to sanity check these and other basic scripting
features, check-perf-trace.pl, was also added.

Implement trace_scripting_ops to make Perl a supported perf
trace scripting language.
Additionally adds code that allows Perl trace scripts to access
the 'flag' and 'symbolic' (__print_flags(), __print_symbolic())
field information parsed from the trace format files.
Also adds the Perl implementation of the generate_script()
trace_scripting_op, which creates a ready-to-run perf trace Perl
script based on existing trace data. Scripts generated by this
implementation print out all the fields for each event mentioned
in perf.data (and will detect and generate the proper scripting
code for 'flag' and 'symbolic' fields), and will additionally
generate handlers for the special 'trace_unhandled',
'trace_begin' and 'trace_end' handlers. Script authors can
simply remove the printing code to implement their own custom
event handling.

Adds an interface, scripting_ops, that when implemented for a
particular scripting language enables built-in support for trace
stream processing using that language.
The interface is designed to enable full-fledged language
interpreters to be embedded inside the perf executable and
thereby make the full capabilities of the supported languages
available for trace processing.
See below for details on the interface.
This patch also adds a couple command-line options to 'perf
trace':
The -s option option is used to specify the script to be run.
Script names that can be used with -s take the form:
[language spec:]scriptname[.ext]
Scripting languages register a set of 'language specs' that can
be used to specify scripts for the registered languages. The
specs can be used either as prefixes or extensions.
If [language spec:] is used, the script is taken as a script of
the matching language regardless of any extension it might have.
If [language spec:] is not used, [.ext] is used to look up the
language it corresponds to. Language specs are case
insensitive.
e.g. Perl scripts can be specified in the following ways:
Perl:scriptname
pl:scriptname.py # extension ignored
PL:scriptname
scriptname.pl
scriptname.perl
The -g [language spec] option gives users an easy starting point
for writing scripts in the specified language. Scripting
support for a particular language can implement a
generate_script() scripting op that outputs an empty (or
near-empty) set of handlers for all the events contained in a
given perf.data trace file - this option gives users a direct
way to access that.
Adding support for a scripting language
---------------------------------------
The main thing that needs to be done do add support for a new
language is to implement the scripting_ops interface:
It consists of the following four functions:
start_script()
stop_script()
process_event()
generate_script()
start_script() is called before any events are processed, and is
meant to give the scripting language support an opportunity to
set things up to receive events e.g. create and initialize an
instance of a language interpreter.
stop_script() is called after all events are processed, and is
meant to give the scripting language support an opportunity to
clean up e.g. destroy the interpreter instance, etc.
process_event() is called once for each event and takes as its
main parameter a pointer to the binary trace event record to be
processed. The implementation is responsible for picking out the
binary fields from the event record and sending them to the
script handler function associated with that event e.g. a
function derived from the event name it's meant to handle e.g.
'sched::sched_switch()'. The 'format' information for trace
events can be used to parse the binary data and map it into a
form usable by a given scripting language; see the Perl
implemention in subsequent patches for one possible way to
leverage the existing trace format parsing code in perf and map
that info into specific scripting language types.
generate_script() should generate a ready-to-run script for the
current set of events in the trace, preferably with bodies that
print out every field for each event. Again, look at the Perl
implementation for clues as to how that can be done. This is an
optional, but very useful op.
Support for a given language should also add a language-specific
setup function and call it from setup_scripting(). The
language-specific setup function associates the the scripting
ops for that language with one or more 'language specifiers'
(see below) using script_spec_register(). When a script name is
specified on the command line, the scripting ops associated with
the specified language are used to instantiate and use the
appropriate interpreter to process the trace stream.
In general, it should be relatively easy to add support for a
new language, especially if the language implementation supports
an interface allowing an interpreter to be 'embedded' inside
another program (in this case the containing program will be
'perf trace'). If so, it should be relatively straightforward to
translate trace events into invocations of user-defined script
functions where e.g. the function name corresponds to the event
type and the function parameters correspond to the event fields.
The event and field type information exported by the event
tracing infrastructure (via the event 'format' files) should be
enough to parse and send any piece of trace data to the user
script. The easiest way to see how this can be done would be to
look at the Perl implementation contained in
perf/util/trace-event-perl.c/.h.
There are a couple of other things that aren't covered by the
scripting_ops or setup interface and are technically optional,
but should be implemented if possible. One of these is support
for 'flag' and 'symbolic' fields e.g. being able to use more
human-readable values such as 'GFP_KERNEL' or
HI/BLOCK_IOPOLL/TASKLET in place of raw flag values. See the
Perl implementation to see how this can be done. The other thing
is support for 'calling back' into the perf executable to access
e.g. uncommon fields not passed by default into handler
functions, or any metadata the implementation might want to make
available to users via the language interface. Again, see the
Perl implementation for examples.

Now we have a very high level routine for simple tools to
process IP sample events:
int event__preprocess_sample(const event_t *self,

symbol_filter_t filter)
It receives the event itself and will insert new threads in the
global threads list and resolve the map and symbol, filling all
this info into the new addr_location struct, so that tools like
annotate and report can further process the event by creating
hist_entries in their specific way (with or without callgraphs,
etc).
It in turn uses the new next layer function:
void thread__find_addr_location(struct thread *self, u8 cpumode,
enum map_type type, u64 addr,
struct addr_location *al,
symbol_filter_t filter)
This one will, given a thread (userspace or the kernel kthread
one), will find the given type (MAP__FUNCTION now, MAP__VARIABLE
too in the near future) at the given cpumode, taking vdsos into
account (userspace hit, but kernel symbol) and will fill all
these details in the addr_location given.
Tools that need a more compact API for plain function
resolution, like 'kmem', can use this other one:
struct symbol *thread__find_function(struct thread *self, u64 addr,
symbol_filter_t filter)
So, to resolve a kernel symbol, that is all the 'kmem' tool
needs, its just a matter of calling:
sym = thread__find_function(kthread, addr, NULL);
The 'filter' parameter is needed because we do lazy
parsing/loading of ELF symtabs or /proc/kallsyms.
With this we remove more code duplication all around, which is
always good, huh? :-)

While implementing event__preprocess_sample, that will do all of
the symbol lookup in one convenient function, I noticed that
util/process_event.[ch] were not being used at all, then started
looking if there were other functions that could be shared
and...
All those functions really don't need to receive offset + head,
the only thing they did was common to all of them, so do it at
one place instead.
Stats about number of each type of event processed now is done
in a central place.

Making the routines that were so far specific to the kernel maps
useful for all threads.
This is done by making the kernel maps be contained in a kernel
"thread".
This gets the kernel specific routines closer to the userspace
counterparts, which will help in reducing the boilerplate for
resolving a symbol, as will be demonstrated in the next patches.

So that the kallsyms loading routines are the direct counterpart
of the vmlinux loading ones, i.e. dso__load_kallsyms is the
counterpart of dso__load_vmlinux.
In the process make them also use the symbols rb tree indexed by
map->type, paving the way for supporting other types of symtabs,
such as the next one to be supported: variables.
This also allowed removal of yet another global variable:
kernel_map__functions.

By using an array of rb_roots in struct dso we can, from a
struct map instance to get the right symbol rb_tree more easily.
This way we can have just one symbol lookup method for struct
map instances, map__find_symbol, instead of one per symtab type
(functions, variables).

We don't need to look at modules in dsos__findnew because the
kernel events come only with user DSOs. Also we need a way to
list just the module DSOs so that we can create multiple sets of
maps, now that we will support maps for the variables in a
symtab.

And also express its configuration toggles via a struct.
Now all one has to do is to call symbol__init(NULL) if the
defaults are OK, or pass a struct symbol_conf pointer with the
desired configuration.
If a tool uses kernel_maps__find_symbol() to look at the kernel
and modules mappings for a symbol but didn't call symbol__init()
first, that will generate a one time warning too, alerting the
subcommand developer that symbol__init() must be called.

Currently, perf fails to compile on powerpc with this error:

The reason is that we still have a #define __KERNEL__ in effect
at the point where <asm/unistd.h> gets included, which means we
get extra stuff that we don't need or want.
This fixes the problem by undefining __KERNEL__ once we have
included the file for which we need __KERNEL__ defined.

The write_event() function in builtin-record.c writes out all
mmap()'d DSOs including non-ELF files like GNOME resource files
and such.
Therefore, check for ELF_K_ELF in filename__read_build_id()
before attempting to read the ELF header with gelf_getehdr().
Fixes the following error messages when running "perf kmem
record":

It better propagate errors, also if we do a simple:

We better call this routine after both the kernel and modules
are loaded, because as it was if there weren't modules it would not
be called, resulting in kernel_map->end remaining at zero, so no
map would be found and consequently the kernel symtab wouldn't
get loaded, i.e. no kernel symbols would be resolved.
Also this fixes another case, that is when we _have_ modules,
but the last map would have its ->end address not set before we
loaded its symbols, which would never happen because ->end was
not set.

I.e. perf top was told to use a vmlinux file that is not the one
currently running on the machine, it ignores it and falls back
to using /proc/kallsyms.
This solves many, at first, mysterious results when people have
a stale vmlinux file while keeping the default of trying to use
the vmlinux file in the current directory in things like 'perf
annotate' where the DWARF info is required and thus we can't use
just /proc/kallsyms.
Modules buildids are already being checked as of the previous
changeset in this series, because we are using the default
dso__load routine, that will look at a series of places looking
for the best file with a matching buildid, starting in the
-debuginfo directories.

Just like we do with the other DSOs. This also simplifies the
kernel_maps setup process, now all that the tools need to do is
to call kernel_maps__init and the maps for the modules and
kernel will be created, then, later, when
kernel_maps__find_symbol() is used, it will also call
maps__find_symbol that already checks if the symtab was loaded,
loading it if needed.
Now if one does 'perf top --hide_kernel_symbols' we won't pay
the price of loading the (many) symbols in /proc/kallsyms or
vmlinux.

In the kernel we have more than one notes section, so the linker
script combines all and puts them into a ".notes" combined
section. So we need to look at both sections and also traverse
them looking at multiple GElf_Nhdr entries till we find the one
we want, with the build_id.

It should just load kernel symbols, not load the list of
modules. There are more stuff to move to other routines, but
lets do it in several steps.
End goal is to be able to defer symbol table loading till we
find a hit for that map address range. So that the kernel &
modules are handled just like all the other DSOs in the system.

Several refactorings were needed so that we can have symmetry
between dsos__load_modules() and dsos__load_kernel(), i.e. those
functions will respectively create and add to the dsos list the
loaded modules and kernel, with its buildids, but not load its
symbols. That is something the subcomands that need will have to
call dso__load_kernel_sym(), just like we do with modules with
dsos__load_module_sym()/dso__load_module_sym().
Next csets will actually use this info to stop producing bogus
results using mismatched vmlinux and .ko files.

No need for this struct and its allocations, we can just use the
->build_id member we already have in struct dso, then ask for it
to be read, and later traverse the dsos list, writing the
buildid table to the perf.data file.
As a bonus, one more die() function got killed.

When we read the build_id from the DSO name to then index into
/usr/lib/debug/.buildid/DSO_BUILD_ID[0:2]/DSO_BUILD_ID[2:], we
were jumping directly to the comparision with the buildid we
already have in dso->build_id (that came from the perf.data
build_id section, collected at perf record time)
unconditionally, even if we didn't had recorded it, and
furthermore, comparing a formatted buildid with a rawbuildid, yikes.
Fix it by deleting the dso__read_build_id() function, that was
really misdesigned anyway, and do the necessary checks and
correct comparison of raw buildids.

calculate this strlen for fetching the buildids. We'll use it in
'perf top' to auto-adjust the output based on the terminal
width.
