Jeremy Fitzhardinge f8822f4201 [PATCH] i386: PARAVIRT: Consistently wrap paravirt ops callsites to make them patchable
Wrap a set of interesting paravirt_ops calls in a wrapper which makes
the callsites available for patching.  Unfortunately this is pretty
ugly because there's no way to get gcc to generate a function call,
but also wrap just the callsite itself with the necessary labels.

This patch supports functions with 0-4 arguments, and either void or
returning a value.  64-bit arguments must be split into a pair of
32-bit arguments (lower word first).  Small structures are returned in
registers.

Fix a few clobbers to include the return register.  The clobbers set
is the set of all registers modified (or may be modified) by the code
snippet, regardless of whether it was deliberate or accidental.

Also, make sure that callsites which are used in contexts which don't
allow clobbers actually save and restore all clobberable registers.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge d582203578 [PATCH] i386: PARAVIRT: Use patch site IDs computed from offset in paravirt_ops structure
Use patch type identifiers derived from the offset of the operation in
the paravirt_ops structure.  This avoids having to maintain a separate
enum for patch site types.

Also, since the identifier is derived from the offset into
paravirt_ops, the offset can be derived from the identifier.  This is
used to remove replicated information in the various callsite macros,
which has been a source of bugs in the past.

This patch also drops the fused save_fl+cli operation, which doesn't
really add much and makes things more complex - specifically because
it breaks the 1:1 relationship between identifiers and offsets.  If
this operation turns out to be particularly beneficial, then the right
answer is to define a new entrypoint for it.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge d6dd61c831 [PATCH] x86: PARAVIRT: add hooks to intercept mm creation and destruction
Add hooks to allow a paravirt implementation to track the lifetime of
an mm.  Paravirtualization requires three hooks, but only two are
needed in common code.  They are:

arch_dup_mmap, which is called when a new mmap is created at fork

arch_exit_mmap, which is called when the last process reference to an
  mm is dropped, which typically happens on exit and exec.

The third hook is activate_mm, which is called from the arch-specific
activate_mm() macro/function, and so doesn't need stub versions for
other architectures.  It's called when an mm is first used.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge 5311ab62cd [PATCH] i386: PARAVIRT: Allow paravirt backend to choose kernel PMD sharing
Normally when running in PAE mode, the 4th PMD maps the kernel address space,
which can be shared among all processes (since they all need the same kernel
mappings).

Xen, however, does not allow guests to have the kernel pmd shared between page
tables, so parameterize pgtable.c to allow both modes of operation.

There are several side-effects of this.  One is that vmalloc will update the
kernel address space mappings, and those updates need to be propagated into
all processes if the kernel mappings are not intrinsically shared.  In the
non-PAE case, this is done by maintaining a pgd_list of all processes; this
list is used when all process pagetables must be updated.  pgd_list is
threaded via otherwise unused entries in the page structure for the pgd, which
means that the pgd must be page-sized for this to work.

Normally the PAE pgd is only 4x64 byte entries large, but Xen requires the PAE
pgd to page aligned anyway, so this patch forces the pgd to be page
aligned+sized when the kernel pmd is unshared, to accomodate both these
requirements.

Also, since there may be several distinct kernel pmds (if the user/kernel
split is below 3G), there's no point in allocating them from a slab cache;
they're just allocated with get_free_page and initialized appropriately.  (Of
course the could be cached if there is just a single kernel pmd - which is the
default with a 3G user/kernel split - but it doesn't seem worthwhile to add
yet another case into this code).

Jeremy Fitzhardinge 90caccb975 [PATCH] i386: PARAVIRT: Allocate a fixmap slot
Allocate a fixmap slot for use by a paravirt_ops implementation.  This
is intended for early-boot bootstrap mappings.  Once the zones and
allocator have been set up, it would be better to use get_vm_area() to
allocate some virtual space.

Xen uses this to map the hypervisor's shared info page, which doesn't
have a pseudo-physical page number, and therefore can't be mapped
ordinarily.  It is needed early because it contains the vcpu state,
including the interrupt mask.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge b239fb2501 [PATCH] i386: PARAVIRT: Hooks to set up initial pagetable
This patch introduces paravirt_ops hooks to control how the kernel's
initial pagetable is set up.

In the case of a native boot, the very early bootstrap code creates a
simple non-PAE pagetable to map the kernel and physical memory.  When
the VM subsystem is initialized, it creates a proper pagetable which
respects the PAE mode, large pages, etc.

When booting under a hypervisor, there are many possibilities for what
paging environment the hypervisor establishes for the guest kernel, so
the constructon of the kernel's pagetable depends on the hypervisor.

In the case of Xen, the hypervisor boots the kernel with a fully
constructed pagetable, which is already using PAE if necessary.  Also,
Xen requires particular care when constructing pagetables to make sure
all pagetables are always mapped read-only.

In order to make this easier, kernel's initial pagetable construction
has been changed to only allocate and initialize a pagetable page if
there's no page already present in the pagetable.  This allows the Xen
paravirt backend to make a copy of the hypervisor-provided pagetable,
allowing the kernel to establish any more mappings it needs while
keeping the existing ones.

A slightly subtle point which is worth highlighting here is that Xen
requires all kernel mappings to share the same pte_t pages between all
pagetables, so that updating a kernel page's mapping in one pagetable
is reflected in all other pagetables.  This makes it possible to
allocate a page and attach it to a pagetable without having to
explicitly enumerate that page's mapping in all pagetables.

If we don't set the leaf page table entries it is quite possible that
will inherit and incorrect page table entry from the initial boot
page table setup in head.S.  So we need to redo the effort here,
so we pick up PSE, PGE and the like.

Hypervisors like Xen require that their page tables be read-only,
which is slightly incompatible with our low identity mappings, however
I discussed this with Jeremy he has modified the Xen early set_pte
function to avoid problems in this area.

Add a set of accessors to pack, unpack and modify page table entries
(at all levels).  This allows a paravirt implementation to control the
contents of pgd/pmd/pte entries.  For example, Xen uses this to
convert the (pseudo-)physical address into a machine address when
populating a pagetable entry, and converting back to pphys address
when an entry is read.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge 4587623360 [PATCH] i386: PARAVIRT: use paravirt_nop to consistently mark no-op operations
Add a _paravirt_nop function for use as a stub for no-op operations,
and paravirt_nop #defined void * version to make using it easier
(since all its uses are as a void *).

This is useful to allow the patcher to automatically identify noop
operations so it can simply nop out the callsite.

lguest defines its own TSS struct because the "struct tss_struct"
contains linux-specific additions.  Andi asked me to split the struct
in processor.h.

Unfortunately it makes usage a little awkward.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge 1dbf527c51 [PATCH] i386: Make COMPAT_VDSO runtime selectable.
Now that relocation of the VDSO for COMPAT_VDSO users is done at
runtime rather than compile time, it is possible to enable/disable
compat mode at runtime.

This patch allows you to enable COMPAT_VDSO mode with "vdso=2" on the
kernel command line, or via sysctl.  (Switching on a running system
shouldn't be done lightly; any process which was relying on the compat
VDSO will be upset if it goes away.)

The COMPAT_VDSO config option still exists, but if enabled it just
makes vdso_enabled default to VDSO_COMPAT.

Fix oops from i386-make-compat_vdso-runtime-selectable.patch.

Even mingetty at system startup finds it easy to trigger an oops
while reading /proc/PID/maps: though it has a good hold on the mm
itself, that cannot stop exit_mm() from resetting tsk->mm to NULL.

(It is usually show_map()'s call to get_gate_vma() which oopses,
and I expect we could change that to check priv->tail_vma instead;
but no matter, even m_start()'s call just after get_task_mm() is racy.)

Jeremy Fitzhardinge d4f7a2c18e [PATCH] i386: Relocate VDSO ELF headers to match mapped location with COMPAT_VDSO
Some versions of libc can't deal with a VDSO which doesn't have its
ELF headers matching its mapped address.  COMPAT_VDSO maps the VDSO at
a specific system-wide fixed address.  Previously this was all done at
build time, on the grounds that the fixed VDSO address is always at
the top of the address space.  However, a hypervisor may reserve some
of that address space, pushing the fixmap address down.

This patch does the adjustment dynamically at runtime, depending on
the runtime location of the VDSO fixmap.

[ Patch has been through several hands: Jan Beulich wrote the orignal
  version; Zach reworked it, and Jeremy converted it to relocate phdrs
  as well as sections. ]

Jeremy Fitzhardinge a6c4e076ee [PATCH] i386: clean up identify_cpu
identify_cpu() is used to identify both the boot CPU and secondary
CPUs, but it performs some actions which only apply to the boot CPU.
Those functions are therefore really __init functions, but because
they're called by identify_cpu(), they must be marked __cpuinit.

This patch splits identify_cpu() into identify_boot_cpu() and
identify_secondary_cpu(), and calls the appropriate init functions
from each.  Also, identify_boot_cpu() and all the functions it
dominates are marked __init.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge 01a2f43556 [PATCH] i386: Add smp_ops interface
Add a smp_ops interface.  This abstracts the API defined by
<linux/smp.h> for use within arch/i386.  The primary intent is that it
be used by a paravirtualizing hypervisor to implement SMP, but it
could also be used by non-APIC-using sub-architectures.

This is related to CONFIG_PARAVIRT, but is implemented unconditionally
since it is simpler that way and not a highly performance-sensitive
interface.

Now we have an explicit per-cpu GDT variable, we don't need to keep the
descriptors around to use them to find the GDT: expose cpu_gdt directly.

We could go further and make load_gdt() pack the descriptor for us, or even
assume it means "load the current cpu's GDT" which is what it always does.

Rusty Russell 90a0a06aa8 [PATCH] i386: rationalize paravirt wrappers
paravirt.c used to implement native versions of all low-level
functions.  Far cleaner is to have the native versions exposed in the
headers and as inline native_XXX, and if !CONFIG_PARAVIRT, then simply
#define XXX native_XXX.

There are several nice side effects:

1) write_dt_entry() now takes the correct "struct Xgt_desc_struct *"
   not "void *".

2) load_TLS is reintroduced to the for loop, not manually unrolled
   with a #error in case the bounds ever change.

3) Macros become inlines, with type checking.

4) Access to the native versions is trivial for KVM, lguest, Xen and
   others who might want it.

Rusty Russell bf50467204 [PATCH] i386: Use per-cpu GDT immediately upon boot
Now we are no longer dynamically allocating the GDT, we don't need the
"cpu_gdt_table" at all: we can switch straight from "boot_gdt_table" to the
per-cpu GDT.  This means initializing the cpu_gdt array in C.

The boot CPU uses the per-cpu var directly, then in smp_prepare_cpus() it
switches to the per-cpu copy just allocated.  For secondary CPUs, the
early_gdt_descr is set to point directly to their per-cpu copy.

For UP the code is very simple: it keeps using the "per-cpu" GDT as per SMP,
but we never have to move.

Ian Campbell 79e030114a [PATCH] i386: Allow i386 crash kernels to handle x86_64 dumps
The specific case I am encountering is kdump under Xen with a 64 bit
hypervisor and 32 bit kernel/userspace.  The dump created is 64 bit due to
the hypervisor but the dump kernel is 32 bit for maximum compatibility.

It's possibly less likely to be useful in a purely native scenario but I
see no reason to disallow it.

This is never initialized for the initial thread (ie "swapper"), so when we're
scheduling that, we end up setting esp0 to 0.  This is fine: the swapper never
leaves ring 0, so this field is never used.

lguest, however, gets upset that we're trying to used an unmapped page as our
kernel stack.  Rather than work around it there, let's initialize it.

This is then displayed the first time mark_tsc_unstable is called.

systems and allow us to make sure we're not being overly paranoid when
throwing out this troublesome clocksource.

pit_latch_buggy was referred in timers/timer_tsc.c, and currently removed.
Therefore nobody refer it.

Until 2.6.17, MediaGX's TSC works correctly.  after 2.6.18, warned "TSC
appears to be running slowly.  Marking it as unstable".  So marked unstable
TSC when CS55x0.

Now that network timestamps use ktime_t infrastructure, we can add a new
SOL_SOCKET sockopt  SO_TIMESTAMPNS.

This command is similar to SO_TIMESTAMP, but permits transmission of
a 'timespec struct' instead of a 'timeval struct' control message.
(nanosecond resolution instead of microsecond)

Control message is labelled SCM_TIMESTAMPNS instead of SCM_TIMESTAMP

A socket cannot mix SO_TIMESTAMP and SO_TIMESTAMPNS : the two modes are
mutually exclusive.

sock_recv_timestamp() became too big to be fully inlined so I added a
__sock_recv_timestamp() helper function.

Zachary Amsden 49f1971051 [PATCH] Proper fix for highmem kmap_atomic functions for VMI for 2.6.21
Since lazy MMU batching mode still allows interrupts to enter, it is
possible for interrupt handlers to try to use kmap_atomic, which fails when
lazy mode is active, since the PTE update to highmem will be delayed.  The
best workaround is to issue an explicit flush in kmap_atomic_functions
case; this is the only way nested PTE updates can happen in the interrupt
handler.

Thanks to Jeremy Fitzhardinge for noting the bug and suggestions on a fix.

This patch gets reverted again when we start 2.6.22 and the bug gets fixed
differently.

Andi Kleen 3556ddfa92 [PATCH] x86-64: Disable local APIC timer use on AMD systems with C1E
AMD dual core laptops with C1E do not run the APIC timer correctly
when they go idle. Previously the code assumed this only happened
on C2 or deeper.  But not all of these systems report support C2.

Use a AMD supplied snippet to detect C1E being enabled and then disable
local apic timer use.

This supercedes an earlier workaround using DMI detection of specific systems.

Roland McGrath 6ea65ff79c [PATCH] i386: clear segment register padding in core dumps
The segment register slots in struct pt_regs are padded to 32 bits.
Some of these are stored with instructions like "pushl %es", which
leaves the high 16 bits as they were.  So the high bits of these
fields in struct pt_regs contain kernel stack garbage.  These bits are
ignored by everything and never leak to user space, except in core
dumps.  The user struct pt_regs is always at the base of the thread's
kernel stack and so it seems unlikely the information that leaks from
here is ever worthwhile so as to be a security concern, but I'm not
sure about that.  It has been this way for ages; userland consumers of
core dumps all mask off these high bits themselves.  So it is not urgent.

This change masks off the padding bits of the segment register slots
in core dumps.  ptrace already masks off these high bits, so this
makes the values in core dumps consistent with what ptrace would
report just before the process died.

As I read the processor manuals, the cs and ss values will always be
padded with zero bits rather than stack garbage.  But unlike "pushl %es",
this is not simple to test with a userland program.  So I added the two
instructions rather than wonder if they are really never necessary.

I think that x86_64 does not have this problem (for either 32-bit or
64-bit processes).  It only uses "mov" instructions from segment
registers, which zero-extend.

Thomas Gleixner e585bef815 [PATCH] i386: add command line option "local_apic_timer_c2_ok"
It turned out that it is almost impossible to trust ACPI, BIOS & Co.
regarding the C states. This was the reason to switch the local apic
timer off in C2 state already. OTOH there are sane and well behaving
systems, which get punished by that decision.

Allow the user to confirm that the local apic timer is trustworthy in C2
state. This keeps the default behaviour on the safe side.

Andres Salomon 2272b0e03e [PATCH] i386: make x86_64 tsc header require i386 rather than vice-versa
Prior to commit 95492e4646 ([PATCH] x86:
rewrite SMP TSC sync code), the headers in asm-i386 did not really require
anything in include/asm-x86_64.  This means that distributions such as
fedora did not include asm-x86_64 in kernel-devel headers for i386.  Ingo's
commit changed that, and broke things.  This is easy enough to hack around
in package builds by just including asm-x86_64 on i386, but that's kind of
annoying.  If anything, x86_64 should depend upon i386, not the other way
around.

This patch changes it so that asm-x86_64/tsc.h includes asm-i386/tsc.h,
rather than vice-versa.

there's a new NMI watchdog related problem: KVM crashes on certain
bzImages because ... we enable the NMI watchdog by default (even if the
user does not ask for it) , and no other OS on this planet does that so
KVM doesnt have emulation for that yet. So KVM injects a #GP, which
crashes the Linux guest:

Solution: turn off that darn thing! It's a debug tool, not a 'make life

with this patch the KVM guest boots up just fine.

And with this my laptop (Lenovo T60) also stopped its sporadic hard
hanging (sometimes in acpi_init(), sometimes later during bootup,
sometimes much later during actual use) as well. It hung with both
nmi_watchdog=1 and nmi_watchdog=2, so it's generally the fact of NMI
injection that is causing problems, not the NMI watchdog variant, nor
any particular bootup code.

Use para_fill instead of directly setting the APIC ops to the result of the
vmi_get_function call - this allows one to implement a VMI ROM without
implementing APIC functions, just using the native APIC functions.

While doing this, I realized that there is a lot more cleanup that should have
been done.  Basically, we should never assume that the ROM implements a
specific set of functions, and always allow fallback to the native
implementation.

This is critical for future compatibility.

Zachary Amsden e30fab3ad3 [PATCH] vmi: pit override
The time_init_hook in paravirt-ops no longer functions in the correct manner
after the integration of the hrtimers code.  The problem is that now the call
path for time initialization is:

  time_init :
       late_time_init = hpet_time_init;

  late_time_init -> hpet_time_init:
       setup_pit_timer (BAD)
       do_time_init --> (via paravirt.h)
          time_init_hook --> (via arch_hooks.h)
              time_init_hook (in SUBARCH/setup.c)

If this isn't confusing enough, the paravirt case goes through an indirect
function pointer in the paravirt-ops table.  The problem is, by the time the
paravirt hook is called, the pit timer is already enabled.

But paravirt guests have their own timer, and don't want to use the PIT.
Rather than intensify the struggle for power going on here, just make it all
nice and simple and just unconditionally do all timer setup in the
late_time_init hook.  This also has the advantage of enabling timers in the
same place in all code paths, so everyone has the same bugs and we don't have
outliers who break other code because they turn on timer too early or too
late.

So the paravirt-ops time init function is now by default hpet_time_init, which
is the time init function used for native hardware.  Paravirt guests have the
chance to override this when they setup the paravirt-ops table, and should
need no change.

Zachary Amsden eda08b1bef [PATCH] vmi: paravirt drop udelay op
Not respecting udelay causes problems with any virtual hardware that is passed
through to real hardware.  This can be noticed by any device that interacts
with the real world in real time - like AP startup, which takes real time.  Or
keyboard LEDs, which should blink in real-time.  Or floppy drives, but only
when passed through to a real floppy controller on OSes which can't
sufficiently buffer the floppy commands to emulate a zero latency floppy.  Or
IDE drives, when connecting to a physical CDROM.

This was mostly a hack to get the kernel to boot faster, but it introduced a
number of misvirtualization bugs, and Alan and Pavel argued pretty strongly
against it.  We were the only client, and now want to clean up this cruft.

Provide a PT map hook for HIGHPTE kernels to designate where they are mapping
page tables.  This information is required so the physical address of PTE
updates can be determined; otherwise, the mm layer would have to carry the
physical address all the way to each PTE modification callsite, which is even
more hideous that the macros required to provide the proper hooks.

So lets not mess up arch neutral code to achieve this, but keep the horror in
an #ifdef HIGHPTE in include/asm-i386/pgtable.h.  I had to use macros here
because some types are not yet defined in all the include paths for this
header.

This patch is absolutely required for HIGHPTE kernels to operate properly with
VMI.

Zachary Amsden 6cb9a8350a [PATCH] vmi: sched clock paravirt op fix
The custom_sched_clock hook is broken.  The result from sched_clock needs to
be in nanoseconds, not in CPU cycles.  The TSC is insufficient for this
purpose, because TSC is poorly defined in a virtual environment, and mostly
represents real world time instead of scheduled process time (which can be
interrupted without notice when a virtual machine is descheduled).

To make the scheduler consistent, we must expose a different nature of time,
that is scheduled time.  So deprecate this custom_sched_clock hack and turn it
into a paravirt-op, as it should have been all along.  This allows the tsc.c
code which converts cycles to nanoseconds to be shared by all paravirt-ops
backends.

It is unfortunate to add a new paravirt-op, but this is a very distinct
abstraction which is clearly different for all virtual machine
implementations, and it gets rid of an ugly indirect function which I
ashamedly admit I hacked in to try to get this to work earlier, and then even
got in the wrong units.

Con Kolivas 69f7c0a1be [PATCH] sched: remove SMT nice
Remove the SMT-nice feature which idles sibling cpus on SMT cpus to
facilitiate nice working properly where cpu power is shared.  The idling of
cpus in the presence of runnable tasks is considered too fragile, easy to
break with outside code, and the complexity of managing this system if an
architecture comes along with many logical cores sharing cpu power will be
unworkable.

Remove the associated per_cpu_gain variable in sched_domains used only by
this code.

Also:

  The reason is that with dynticks enabled, this code breaks without yet
  further tweaks so dynticks brought on the rapid demise of this code.  So
  either we tweak this code or kill it off entirely.  It was Ingo's preference
  to kill it off.  Either way this needs to happen for 2.6.21 since dynticks
  has gone in.

Alexey Dobriyan b077ffb3b7 rdmsr_on_cpu, wrmsr_on_cpu
There was OpenVZ specific bug rendering some cpufreq drivers unusable on SMP.
In short, when cpufreq code thinks it confined itself to needed cpu by means
of set_cpus_allowed() to execute rdmsr, some "virtual cpu" feature can migrate
process to anywhere.  This triggers bugons and does wrong things in general.

This got fixed by introducing rdmsr_on_cpu and wrmsr_on_cpu executing rdmsr
and wrmsr on given physical cpu by means of smp_call_function_single().

Dave Jones mentioned cpufreq might be not only user of rdmsr_on_cpu() and
wrmsr_on_cpu(), so I'm putting them into arch/{i386,x86_64}/lib/ .

Thomas Gleixner d36b49b910 [PATCH] i386 rework local apic timer calibration
The local apic timer calibration has two problem cases:

1.  The calibration is based on readout of the PIT/HPET timer to detect the
   wrap of the periodic tick.  It happens that a box gets stuck in the
   calibration loop due to a PIT with a broken readout function.

2.  CoreDuo boxen show a sporadic PIT runs too slow defect, which results
   in a wrong lapic calibration.  The PIT goes back to normal operation once
   the lapic timer is switched to periodic mode.

Both are existing and unfixed problems in the current upstream kernel and
prevent certain laptops and other systems from booting Linux.

Rework the code to address both problems:

- Make the calibration interrupt driven.  This removes the wait_timer_tick
  magic hackery from lapic.c and time_hpet.c.  The clockevents framework
  allows easy substitution of the global tick event handler for the
  calibration.  This is more accurate than monitoring jiffies.  At this point
  of the boot process, nothing disturbes the interrupt delivery, so the
  results are very accurate.

- Verify the calibration against the PM timer, when available by using the
  early access function.  When the measured calibration period is outside of
  an one percent window, then the lapic timer calibration is adjusted to the
  pm timer result.

- Verify the calibration by running the lapic timer with the calibration
  handler.  Disable lapic timer in case of deviation.

This also removes the "synchronization" of the local apic timer to the global
tick.  This synchronization never worked, as there is no way to synchronize
PIT(HPET) and local APIC timer.  The synchronization by waiting for the tick
just alignes the local APIC timer for the first events, but later the events
drift away due to the different clocks.  Removing the "sync" is just
randomizing the asynchronous behaviour at setup time.

Thomas Gleixner e9e2cdb412 [PATCH] clockevents: i386 drivers
Add clockevent drivers for i386: lapic (local) and PIT/HPET (global).  Update
the timer IRQ to call into the PIT/HPET driver's event handler and the
lapic-timer IRQ to call into the lapic clockevent driver.  The assignement of
timer functionality is delegated to the core framework code and replaces the
compile and runtime evalution in do_timer_interrupt_hook()

Use the clockevents broadcast support and implement the lapic_broadcast
function for ACPI.

No changes to existing functionality.

Marcelo Tosatti 07190a08ee [PATCH] Mark TSC on GeodeLX reliable
The Geode can safely use the TSC for highres, since:

1) Does not support frequency scaling,

2) The TSC _does_ count when the CPU is halted.  Furthermore, the Geode
   supports a mode called "suspension on halt", where Suspend mode (which
   interacts with the power management states) is entered.  TSC counting
   during suspend mode is controlled by bit 8 of the Bus Controller
   Configuration Register #0 (thanks Tom!).

3) no SMP :)

Check if "RTSC counts during suspension" and remove the requirement for
verification, so the clocksource code can safely select it as an timesource
for the highres timers subsystem.

Ingo Molnar 95492e4646 [PATCH] x86: rewrite SMP TSC sync code
make the TSC synchronization code more robust, and unify it between x86_64 and
i386.

The biggest change is the removal of the 'fix up TSCs' code on x86_64 and
i386, in some rare cases it was /causing/ time-warps on SMP systems.

The new code only checks for TSC asynchronity - and if it can prove a
time-warp (if it can observe the TSC going backwards when going from one CPU
to another within a critical section), then the TSC clock-source is turned
off.

The TSC synchronization-checking code also got moved into a separate file.

It is only one of many horrors in the i386 boot code, but let's rename
the non-perpcu cpu_gdt_descr to early_gdt_descr (not boot_gdt_descr,
that's something else...)

Ingo Molnar f9690982b8 [PATCH] i386: improve sched_clock() on i686
Clean up sched_clock() on i686: it will use the TSC if available and falls
back to jiffies only if the user asked for it to be disabled via notsc or
the CPU calibration code didnt figure out the right cpu_khz.

This generally makes the scheduler timestamps more finegrained, on all
hardware.  (the current scheduler is pretty resistant against asynchronous
sched_clock() values on different CPUs, it will allow at most up to a jiffy
of jitter.)

Also simplify sched_clock()'s check for TSC availability: propagate the
desire and ability to use the TSC into the tsc_disable flag, previously
this flag only indicated whether the notsc option was passed.  This makes
the rare low-res sched_clock() codepath a single branch off a read-mostly
flag.

Add a notifier mechanism to the low level idle loop.  You can register a
callback function which gets invoked on entry and exit from the low level idle
loop.  The low level idle loop is defined as the polling loop, low-power call,
or the mwait instruction.  Interrupts processed by the idle thread are not
considered part of the low level loop.

The notifier can be used to measure precisely how much is spent in useless
execution (or low power mode).  The perfmon subsystem uses it to turn on/off
monitoring.

Zachary Amsden 7b35520243 [PATCH] i386: Profile pc badness
Profile_pc was broken when using paravirtualization because the
assumption the kernel was running at CPL 0 was violated, causing
bad logic to read a random value off the stack.

The only way to be in kernel lock functions is to be in kernel
code, so validate that assumption explicitly by checking the CS
value.  We don't want to be fooled by BIOS / APM segments and
try to read those stacks, so only match KERNEL_CS.

I moved some stuff in segment.h to make it prettier.

Zachary Amsden bbab4f3bb7 [PATCH] i386: vMI timer patches
VMI timer code.  It works by taking over the local APIC clock when APIC is
configured, which requires a couple hooks into the APIC code.  The backend
timer code could be commonized into the timer infrastructure, but there are
some pieces missing (stolen time, in particular), and the exact semantics of
when to do accounting for NO_IDLE need to be shared between different
hypervisors as well.  So for now, VMI timer is a separate module.

Zachary Amsden ae5da273fe [PATCH] i386: SMP boot hook for paravirt
Add VMI SMP boot hook.  We emulate a regular boot sequence and use the same
APIC IPI initiation, we just poke magic values to load into the CPU state when
the startup IPI is received, rather than having to jump through a real mode
trampoline.

This is all that was needed to get SMP to work.

Zachary Amsden 9226d125d9 [PATCH] i386: paravirt CPU hypercall batching mode
The VMI ROM has a mode where hypercalls can be queued and batched.  This turns
out to be a significant win during context switch, but must be done at a
specific point before side effects to CPU state are visible to subsequent
instructions.  This is similar to the MMU batching hooks already provided.
The same hooks could be used by the Xen backend to implement a context switch
multicall.

To explain a bit more about lazy modes in the paravirt patches, basically, the
idea is that only one of lazy CPU or MMU mode can be active at any given time.
 Lazy MMU mode is similar to this lazy CPU mode, and allows for batching of
multiple PTE updates (say, inside a remap loop), but to avoid keeping some
kind of state machine about when to flush cpu or mmu updates, we just allow
one or the other to be active.  Although there is no real reason a more
comprehensive scheme could not be implemented, there is also no demonstrated
need for this extra complexity.

Zachary Amsden c119ecce89 [PATCH] MM: page allocation hooks for VMI backend
The VMI backend uses explicit page type notification to track shadow page
tables.  The allocation of page table roots is especially tricky.  We need to
clone the root for non-PAE mode while it is protected under the pgd lock to
correctly copy the shadow.

We don't need to allocate pgds in PAE mode, (PDPs in Intel terminology) as
they only have 4 entries, and are cached entirely by the processor, which
makes shadowing them rather simple.

For base page table level allocation, pmd_populate provides the exact hook
point we need.  Also, we need to allocate pages when splitting a large page,
and we must release pages before returning the page to any free pool.

Despite being required with these slightly odd semantics for VMI, Xen also
uses these hooks to determine the exact moment when page tables are created or
released.

Convert the PDA code to use %fs rather than %gs as the segment for
per-processor data.  This is because some processors show a small but
measurable performance gain for reloading a NULL segment selector (as %fs
generally is in user-space) versus a non-NULL one (as %gs generally is).

On modern processors the difference is very small, perhaps undetectable.
Some old AMD "K6 3D+" processors are noticably slower when %fs is used
rather than %gs; I have no idea why this might be, but I think they're
sufficiently rare that it doesn't matter much.

This patch also fixes the math emulator, which had not been adjusted to
match the changed struct pt_regs.

Current implementation allows the kernel to receive up to 255 characters from
the bootloader.  While the boot protocol allows greater buffers to be sent.

In current environment, the command-line is used in order to specify many
values, including suspend/resume, module arguments, splash, initramfs and
more.

255 characters are not enough anymore.

After edd issue was fixed, and dynammic kernel command-line patch was
accepted, we can extend the COMMAND_LINE_SIZE without runtime memory
requirements.

Tilman Schmidt 4564f9e5fd [PATCH] consolidate line discipline number definitions
The line discipline numbers N_* are currently defined for each architecture
individually, but (except for a seeming mistake) identically, in
asm/termios.h.  There is no obvious reason why these numbers should be
architecture specific, nor any apparent relationship with the termios
structure.  The total number of these, NR_LDISCS, is defined in linux/tty.h
anyway.  So I propose the following patch which moves the definitions of
the individual line disciplines to linux/tty.h too.

Three of these numbers (N_MASC, N_PROFIBUS_FDL, and N_SMSBLOCK) are unused
in the current kernel, but the patch still keeps the complete set in case
there are plans to use them yet.

Al Viro 4ec031166f [PATCH] kill eth_io_copy_and_sum()
On all targets that sucker boils down to memcpy_fromio(sbk->data, from, len).
The function name is highly misguiding (it _never_ does any checksums), the
last argument is just a noise and simply expanding the call to memcpy_fromio()
gives shorter and more readable source.  For a lot of reasons it has almost
no remaining users, so it's better to just outright kill it.

Roland McGrath f47aef55d9 [PATCH] i386 vDSO: use VM_ALWAYSDUMP
This patch fixes core dumps to include the vDSO vma, which is left out now.
It removes the special-case core writing macros, which were not doing the
right thing for the vDSO vma anyway.  Instead, it uses VM_ALWAYSDUMP in the
vma; there is no need for the fixmap page to be installed.  It handles the
CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO case by making elf_core_dump use the fake vma from
get_gate_vma after real vmas in the same way the /proc/PID/maps code does.

This changes core dumps so they no longer include the non-PT_LOAD phdrs from
the vDSO.  I made the change to add them in the first place, but in turned out
that nothing ever wanted them there since the advent of NT_AUXV.  It's cleaner
to leave them out, and just let the phdrs inside the vDSO image speak for
themselves.

Roland McGrath a1f3bb9ae4 [PATCH] Fix CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO
I wouldn't mind if CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO went away entirely.  But if it's there,
it should work properly.  Currently it's quite haphazard: both real vma and
fixmap are mapped, both are put in the two different AT_* slots, sysenter
returns to the vma address rather than the fixmap address, and core dumps yet
are another story.

This patch makes CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO disable the real vma and use the fixmap
area consistently.  This makes it actually compatible with what the old vdso
implementation did.

James Bottomley 9ee79a3d37 [PATCH] x86: fix PDA variables to work during boot
The current PDA code, which went in in post 2.6.19 has a flaw in that it
doesn't correctly cycle the GDT and %GS segment through the boot PDA,
the CPU PDA and finally the per-cpu PDA.

The bug generally doesn't show up if the boot CPU id is zero, but
everything falls apart for a non zero boot CPU id.  The basically kills
voyager which is perfectly capable of doing non zero CPU id boots, so
voyager currently won't boot without this.

The fix is to be careful and actually do the GDT setups correctly.

o Relocatable bzImage support had got rid of CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START option
  thinking that now this option is not required as people can build a
  second kernel as relocatable and load it anywhere. So need of compiling
  the kernel for a custom address was gone. But Magnus uses vmlinux images
  for second kernel in Xen environment and he wants to continue to use
  it.

o Restoring the CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START option for the time being. I think
  down the line we can get rid of it.

Yasunori Goto 5c95da9f5a [PATCH] compile error of register_memory()
register_memory() becomes double definition in 2.6.20-rc1.  It is defined
in arch/i386/kernel/setup.c as static definition in 2.6.19.  But it is
moved to arch/i386/kernel/e820.c in 2.6.20-rc1.  And same name function is
defined in driver/base/memory.c too.  So, it becomes cause of compile error
of duplicate definition if memory hotplug option is on.

Rafael J. Wysocki 8a102eed9c [PATCH] PM: Fix SMP races in the freezer
Currently, to tell a task that it should go to the refrigerator, we set the
PF_FREEZE flag for it and send a fake signal to it.  Unfortunately there
are two SMP-related problems with this approach.  First, a task running on
another CPU may be updating its flags while the freezer attempts to set
PF_FREEZE for it and this may leave the task's flags in an inconsistent
state.  Second, there is a potential race between freeze_process() and
refrigerator() in which freeze_process() running on one CPU is reading a
task's PF_FREEZE flag while refrigerator() running on another CPU has just
set PF_FROZEN for the same task and attempts to reset PF_FREEZE for it.  If
the refrigerator wins the race, freeze_process() will state that PF_FREEZE
hasn't been set for the task and will set it unnecessarily, so the task
will go to the refrigerator once again after it's been thawed.

To solve first of these problems we need to stop using PF_FREEZE to tell
tasks that they should go to the refrigerator.  Instead, we can introduce a
special TIF_*** flag and use it for this purpose, since it is allowed to
change the other tasks' TIF_*** flags and there are special calls for it.

To avoid the freeze_process()-refrigerator() race we can make
freeze_process() to always check the task's PF_FROZEN flag after it's read
its "freeze" flag.  We should also make sure that refrigerator() will
always reset the task's "freeze" flag after it's set PF_FROZEN for it.

Alan Cox be90038a24 [PATCH] tty: preparatory structures for termios revamp
In order to sort out our struct termios and add proper speed control we need
to separate the kernel and user termios structures.  Glibc is fine but the
other libraries rely on the kernel exported struct termios and we need to
extend this without breaking the ABI/API

To do so we add a struct ktermios which is the kernel view of a termios
structure and overlaps the struct termios with extra fields on the end for
now.  (That limitation will go away in later patches).  Some platforms (eg
alpha) planned ahead and thus use the same struct for both, others did not.

This just adds the structures but does not use them, it seems a sensible
splitting point for bisect if there are compile failures (not that I expect
them)

Jeremy Fitzhardinge 91768d6c2b [PATCH] Generic BUG for i386
This makes i386 use the generic BUG machinery.  There are no functional
changes from the old i386 implementation.

The main advantage in using the generic BUG machinery for i386 is that the
inlined overhead of BUG is just the ud2a instruction; the file+line(+function)
information are no longer inlined into the instruction stream.  This reduces
cache pollution, and makes disassembly work properly.

Andy Whitcroft 4af2bfc120 [PATCH] silence unused pgdat warning from alloc_bootmem_node and friends
x86 NUMA systems only define bootmem for node 0.  alloc_bootmem_node() and
friends therefore ignore the passed pgdat and use NODE_DATA(0) in all
cases.  This leads to the following warnings as we are not using the passed
parameter:

  .../mm/page_alloc.c: In function 'zone_wait_table_init':
  .../mm/page_alloc.c:2259: warning: unused variable 'pgdat'

One option would be to define all variables used with these macros
__attribute__ ((unused)), but this would leave us exposed should these
become genuinely unused.

The key here is that we _are_ using the value, we ignore it but that is a
deliberate action.  This patch adds a nested local variable within the
alloc_bootmem_node helper to which the pgdat parameter is assigned making
it 'used'.  The nested local is marked __attribute__ ((unused)) to silence
this same warning for it.

Peter Zijlstra a866374aec [PATCH] mm: pagefault_{disable,enable}()
Introduce pagefault_{disable,enable}() and use these where previously we did
manual preempt increments/decrements to make the pagefault handler do the
atomic thing.

Currently they still rely on the increased preempt count, but do not rely on
the disabled preemption, this might go away in the future.

Duncan Sands e4b522d7ef [PATCH] x86-64: fix asm constraints in i386 atomic_add_return
Since v->counter is both read and written, it should be an output as well
as an input for the asm.  The current code only gets away with this because
counter is volatile.  Also, according to Documents/atomic_ops.txt,
atomic_add_return should provide a memory barrier, in particular a compiler
barrier, so the asm should be marked as clobbering memory.

Move the irqbalance quirks for E7320/E7520/E7525(Errata 23 in
http://download.intel.com/design/chipsets/specupdt/30304203.pdf) to early
quirks.

And add a PCI quirk for these platforms to check(which happens very late
during the boot) if the APIC routing is indeed set to default flat mode.

This fixes the breakage(in x86_64) of this quirk due to cpu hotplug which
selects physical mode instead of the logical flat(as needed for this errata
workaround).

Zachary Amsden 8ecb895069 [PATCH] paravirt: fix missing pte update
The function ptep_get_and_clear uses an atomic instruction sequence to get and
clear an active pte.  Rather than add such an atomic operator to all virtual
machine implementations in paravirt-ops, it is easier to support the raw
atomic sequence and use either a trapping writable pagetable approach, or a
post-update notification.  For the post update notification, we require the
pte_update function to be called after the access.  Combine the 2-level and
3-level paging operators into one common function which does the post-update
notification, and rename the actual atomic sequences to raw_ptep_xxx
operators.

Rusty Russell da181a8b39 [PATCH] paravirt: Add MMU virtualization to paravirt_ops
Add the three bare TLB accessor functions to paravirt-ops.  Most amusingly,
flush_tlb is redefined on SMP, so I can't call the paravirt op flush_tlb.
Instead, I chose to indicate the actual flush type, kernel (global) vs. user
(non-global).  Global in this sense means using the global bit in the page
table entry, which makes TLB entries persistent across CR3 reloads, not
global as in the SMP sense of invoking remote shootdowns, so the term is
confusingly overloaded.

Rusty Russell 139ec7c416 [PATCH] paravirt: Patch inline replacements for paravirt intercepts
It turns out that the most called ops, by several orders of magnitude,
are the interrupt manipulation ops.  These are obvious candidates for
patching, so mark them up and create infrastructure for it.

The method used is that the ops structure has a patch function, which
is called for each place which needs to be patched: this returns a
number of instructions (the rest are NOP-padded).

Usually we can spare a register (%eax) for the binary patched code to
use, but in a couple of critical places in entry.S we can't: we make
the clobbers explicit at the call site, and manually clobber the
allowed registers in debug mode as an extra check.

Don't abuse CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL, add CONFIG_DEBUG_PARAVIRT.

Rusty Russell d3561b7fa0 [PATCH] paravirt: header and stubs for paravirtualisation
Create a paravirt.h header for all the critical operations which need to be
replaced with hypervisor calls, and include that instead of defining native
operations, when CONFIG_PARAVIRT.

This patch does the dumbest possible replacement of paravirtualized
instructions: calls through a "paravirt_ops" structure.  Currently these are
function implementations of native hardware: hypervisors will override the ops
structure with their own variants.

All the pv-ops functions are declared "fastcall" so that a specific
register-based ABI is used, to make inlining assember easier.

o Now CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START is being replaced with CONFIG_PHYSICAL_ALIGN.
  Hardcoding the kernel physical start value creates a problem in relocatable
  kernel context due to boot loader limitations. For ex, if somebody
  compiles a relocatable kernel to be run from address 4MB, but this kernel
  will run from location 1MB as grub loads the kernel at physical address
  1MB. Kernel thinks that I am a relocatable kernel and I should run from
  the address I have been loaded at. So somebody wanting to run kernel
  from 4MB alignment location (for improved performance regions) can't do
  that.

o Hence, Eric proposed that probably CONFIG_PHYSICAL_ALIGN will make
  more sense in relocatable kernel context. At run time kernel will move
  itself to a physical addr location which meets user specified alignment
  restrictions.

which prevents the full rebuild problem, which makes the code much
more maintainer and hopefully user friendly.

On x86_64 we have to be careful with calculating the physical
address of kernel symbols.  Both because of compiler odditities
and because the symbols live in a different range of the virtual
address space.

Having a defintition of __pa_symbol that works on both x86_64 and
i386 simplifies writing code that works for both x86_64 and
i386 that has these kinds of dependencies.

So this patch adds the trivial i386 __pa_symbol definition.

Added assembly magic similar to RELOC_HIDE as suggested by Andi Kleen.
Just picked it up from x86_64.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge 49d26b6eaa [PATCH] i386: Update sys_vm86 to cope with changed pt_regs and %gs usage
sys_vm86 uses a struct kernel_vm86_regs, which is identical to pt_regs, but
adds an extra space for all the segment registers.  Previously this structure
was completely independent, so changes in pt_regs had to be reflected in
kernel_vm86_regs.  This changes just embeds pt_regs in kernel_vm86_regs, and
makes the appropriate changes to vm86.c to deal with the new naming.

Also, since %gs is dealt with differently in the kernel, this change adjusts
vm86.c to reflect this.

While making these changes, I also cleaned up some frankly bizarre code which
was added when auditing was added to sys_vm86.

There are a few places where the change in struct pt_regs and the use of %gs
affect the userspace ABI.  These are primarily debugging interfaces where
thread state can be inspected or extracted.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge f95d47caae [PATCH] i386: Use %gs as the PDA base-segment in the kernel
This patch is the meat of the PDA change.  This patch makes several related
changes:

1: Most significantly, %gs is now used in the kernel.  This means that on
   entry, the old value of %gs is saved away, and it is reloaded with
   __KERNEL_PDA.

2: entry.S constructs the stack in the shape of struct pt_regs, and this
   is passed around the kernel so that the process's saved register
   state can be accessed.

   Unfortunately struct pt_regs doesn't currently have space for %gs
   (or %fs). This patch extends pt_regs to add space for gs (no space
   is allocated for %fs, since it won't be used, and it would just
   complicate the code in entry.S to work around the space).

3: Because %gs is now saved on the stack like %ds, %es and the integer
   registers, there are a number of places where it no longer needs to
   be handled specially; namely context switch, and saving/restoring the
   register state in a signal context.

4: And since kernel threads run in kernel space and call normal kernel
   code, they need to be created with their %gs == __KERNEL_PDA.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge 6211119580 [PATCH] i386: Initialize the per-CPU data area
When a CPU is brought up, a PDA and GDT are allocated for it.  The GDT's
__KERNEL_PDA entry is pointed to the allocated PDA memory, so that all
references using this segment descriptor will refer to the PDA.

This patch rearranges CPU initialization a bit, so that the GDT/PDA are set up
as early as possible in cpu_init().  Also for secondary CPUs, GDT+PDA are
preallocated and initialized so all the secondary CPU needs to do is set up
the ldt and load %gs.  This will be important once smp_processor_id() and
current use the PDA.

In all cases, the PDA is set up in head.S, before a CPU starts running C code,
so the PDA is always available.

This patch has the basic definitions of struct i386_pda, and the segment
selector in the GDT.

asm-i386/pda.h is more or less a direct copy of asm-x86_64/pda.h.  The most
interesting difference is the use of _proxy_pda, which is used to give gcc a
model for the actual memory operations on the real pda structure.  No actual
reference is ever made to _proxy_pda, so it is never defined.

Chuck Ebbert acc207616a [PATCH] i386: add sleazy FPU optimization
i386 port of the sLeAZY-fpu feature.  Chuck reports that this gives him a +/-
0.4% improvement on his simple benchmark

x86_64 description follows:

Right now the kernel on x86-64 has a 100% lazy fpu behavior: after *every*
context switch a trap is taken for the first FPU use to restore the FPU
context lazily.  This is of course great for applications that have very
sporadic or no FPU use (since then you avoid doing the expensive save/restore
all the time).  However for very frequent FPU users...  you take an extra trap
every context switch.

The patch below adds a simple heuristic to this code: After 5 consecutive
context switches of FPU use, the lazy behavior is disabled and the context
gets restored every context switch.  If the app indeed uses the FPU, the trap
is avoided.  (the chance of the 6th time slice using FPU after the previous 5
having done so are quite high obviously).

After 256 switches, this is reset and lazy behavior is returned (until there
are 5 consecutive ones again).  The reason for this is to give apps that do
longer bursts of FPU use still the lazy behavior back after some time.

Jeremy Fitzhardinge e5e3a04289 [PATCH] i386: remove default_ldt, and simplify ldt-setting.
This patch removes the default_ldt[] array, as it has been unused since
iBCS stopped being supported.  This means it is now possible to actually
set an empty LDT segment.

In order to deal with this, the set_ldt_desc/load_LDT pair has been
replaced with a single set_ldt() operation which is responsible for both
setting up the LDT descriptor in the GDT, and reloading the LDT register.
If there are no LDT entries, the LDT register is loaded with a NULL
descriptor.

Matthew Wilcox e62438630c [PATCH] Centralise definitions of sector_t and blkcnt_t
CONFIG_LBD and CONFIG_LSF are spread into asm/types.h for no particularly
good reason.

Centralising the definition in linux/types.h means that arch maintainers
don't need to bother adding it, as well as fixing the problem with
x86-64 users being asked to make a decision that has absolutely no
effect.

The H8/300 porters seem particularly confused since I'm not aware of any
microcontrollers that need to support 2TB filesystems.

Venkatesh Pallipadi dfde5d62ed [CPUFREQ][8/8] acpi-cpufreq: Add support for freq feedback from hardware
Enable ondemand governor and acpi-cpufreq to use IA32_APERF and IA32_MPERF MSR
to get active frequency feedback for the last sampling interval. This will
make ondemand take right frequency decisions when hardware coordination of
frequency is going on.

Without APERF/MPERF, ondemand can take wrong decision at times due
to underlying hardware coordination or TM2.
Example:
* CPU 0 and CPU 1 are hardware cooridnated.
* CPU 1 running at highest frequency.
* CPU 0 was running at highest freq. Now ondemand reduces it to
  some intermediate frequency based on utilization.
* Due to underlying hardware coordination with other CPU 1, CPU 0 continues to
  run at highest frequency (as long as other CPU is at highest).
* When ondemand samples CPU 0 again next time, without actual frequency
  feedback from APERF/MPERF, it will think that previous frequency change
  was successful and can go to wrong target frequency. This is because it
  thinks that utilization it has got this sampling interval is when running at
  intermediate frequency, rather than actual highest frequency.

With Processor Native C-state, we use 'MWAIT' instruction on the processor
to enter different C-states (C1, C2, C3).  We won't use the special IO
ports to enter C-state and no SMM mode etc required to enter C-state.
Overall this will mean better C-state support.

One major advantage of using MWAIT for all C-states is, with this and
"treat interrupt as break event" feature of MWAIT, we can now get accurate
timing for the time spent in C1, C2, ..  states.

Implement the epoll_pwait system call, that extend the event wait mechanism
with the same logic ppoll and pselect do.  The definition of epoll_pwait
is:

                 int timeout, const sigset_t *sigmask, size_t sigsetsize);

The difference between the vanilla epoll_wait and epoll_pwait is that the
latter allows the caller to specify a signal mask to be set while waiting
for events.  Hence epoll_pwait will wait until either one monitored event,
or an unmasked signal happen.  If sigmask is NULL, the epoll_pwait system
call will act exactly like epoll_wait.  For the POSIX definition of

David Howells 7d12e780e0 IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.

The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around.  On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).

Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable.  On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.

Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions.  Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller.  A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.

I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386.  I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.

This will affect all archs.  Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

And put the old one back at the end:

	set_irq_regs(old_regs);

Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().

In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:

	-	update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
	-	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
	+	update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
	+	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);

I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().

Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:

 (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely.  The regs pointer is no longer stored in
     the input_dev struct.

 (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking.  It does
     something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
     pointer or not.

 (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
     irq_handler_t.

Eric W. Biederman 3b7d1921f4 [PATCH] msi: refactor and move the msi irq_chip into the arch code
It turns out msi_ops was simply not enough to abstract the architecture
specific details of msi.  So I have moved the resposibility of constructing
the struct irq_chip to the architectures, and have two architecture specific
functions arch_setup_msi_irq, and arch_teardown_msi_irq.

For simple architectures those functions can do all of the work.  For
architectures with platform dependencies they can call into the appropriate
platform code.

With this msi.c is finally free of assuming you have an apic, and this
actually takes less code.

The helpers for the architecture specific code are declared in the linux/msi.h
to keep them separate from the msi functions used by drivers in linux/pci.h

Eric W. Biederman 8b955b0ddd [PATCH] Initial generic hypertransport interrupt support
This patch implements two functions ht_create_irq and ht_destroy_irq for
use by drivers.  Several other functions are implemented as helpers for
arch specific irq_chip handlers.

The driver for the card I tested this on isn't yet ready to be merged.
However this code is and hypertransport irqs are in use in a few other
places in the kernel.  Not that any of this will get merged before 2.6.19

Because the ipath-ht400 is slightly out of spec this code will need to be
generalized to work there.

I think all of the powerpc uses are for a plain interrupt controller in a
chipset so support for native hypertransport devices is a little less
interesting.

However I think this is a half way decent model on how to separate arch
specific and generic helper code, and I think this is a functional model of
how to get the architecture dependencies out of the msi code.

Eric W. Biederman ace80ab796 [PATCH] genirq: i386 irq: Remove the msi assumption that irq == vector
This patch removes the change in behavior of the irq allocation code when
CONFIG_PCI_MSI is defined.  Removing all instances of the assumption that irq
== vector.

create_irq is rewritten to first allocate a free irq and then to assign that
irq a vector.

assign_irq_vector is made static and the AUTO_ASSIGN case which allocates an
vector not bound to an irq is removed.

The ioapic vector methods are removed, and everything now works with irqs.

The definition of NR_IRQS no longer depends on CONFIG_PCI_MSI

Eric W. Biederman 2d3fcc1c54 [PATCH] genirq: i386 irq: Move msi message composition into io_apic.c
This removes the hardcoded assumption that irq == vector in the msi
composition code, and it allows the msi message composition to setup logical
mode, or lowest priorirty delivery mode as we do for other apic interrupts,
and with the same selection criteria.

Basically this moves the problem of what is in the msi message into the
architecture irq management code where it belongs.  Not in a generic layer
that doesn't have enough information to compose msi messages properly.

Keith Mannthey 78b656b8bf [PATCH] i383 numa: fix numaq/summit apicid conflict
This allows numaq to properly align cpus to their given node during
boot.  Pass logical apicid to apicid_to_node and allow the summit
sub-arch to use physical apicid (hard_smp_processor_id()).

Tested against numaq and summit based systems with no issues.
