Turn on special bits to save more power when device is shutdown.
Tested on a limited range of hardware, some of the bits are for hardware
that probably isn't even in production (like Yukon Supreme) and was ported
from the vendor driver.

Any usage of sky2 on new Yukon Supreme would cause a NULL dereference.
The chip is very new, so the support is still untested; vendor has
not sent any eval hardware.

There are a couple of possible races on suspend/resume.
First the driver needs to block new packets from being queued for Tx.
The other less likely problem is the watchdog timer going off
during resume.

Fix problems in LED management, so ethtool -p works correctly on Yukon-EC
and other chips. The driver was incorrectly setting the PHY LED overide bits.

The Yukon FE chip has a ram buffer therefore it needs the alignment
restriction and hang check workarounds.
Therefore:
* Autodetect the prescence/absence of ram buffer
* Rename the flag value to reflect this
* Use it consistently (ie don't reread register)

If the sky2 deadman timer forces a recovery, the multicast hash
list is lost. Move the call to sky2_set_multicast to the end
of sky2_up() so all paths that bring device up will restore multicast.

When using larger MTU's sky2 driver changes from allocating one
data area, to using multiple pages. The threshold for this was based on
a heuristic where the cost of a single allocation is bigger than one
page. Since the allocator has changed, this heuristic is now incorrect;
instead just make the threshold be when the total size of the allocation
is greater than one page.

The sky2 driver was not aligning the IP header on receive buffers.
This workaround is only needed on hardware with broken FIFO, newer chips
without FIFO can just DMA to unaligned address.

The driver checks status of PCI power management to mark
default setting of Wake On Lan. On some systems this works, but often
it reports a that WOL is disabled when it isn't.
This patch gets rid of that check and just reports the wake on
lan status based on the hardware capablity.

When we add the generic napi_disable_pending() breakout
logic to net_rx_action() it means that napi_disable()
can cause NAPI poll interrupt events to be disabled.
And this is exactly what we want. If a napi_disable()
is pending, and we are looping in the ->poll(), we want
->poll() event interrupts to stay disabled and we want
to complete the NAPI poll ASAP.
When ->poll() break out during device down was being handled on a
per-driver basis, often these drivers would turn interrupts back on
when '!netif_running()' was detected.
And this would just cause a reschedule of the NAPI ->poll() in the
interrupt handler before the napi_disable() could get in there and
grab the NAPI_STATE_SCHED bit.
The vast majority of drivers don't care if napi_disable() might have
the side effect of disabling NAPI ->poll() event interrupts. In all
such cases, when a napi_disable() is performed, the driver just
disabled interrupts or is about to.
However there were three exceptions to this in PCNET32, R8169, and
SKY2. To fix those cases, at the subsequent napi_enable() points, I
added code to ensure that the ->poll() interrupt events are enabled in
the hardware.

I'm using a Marvell 88E8062 on a custom PPC64 blade and ran into RX
lockups while validating the sky2 driver. The receive MAC FIFO would
become stuck during testing with high traffic. One port of the 88E8062
would lockup, while the other port remained functional. Re-inserting
the sky2 module would not fix the problem - only a power cycle would.
I looked over Marvell's most recent sk98lin driver and it looks like
they had a "workaround" for the Yukon XL that the sky2 doesn't have yet.
The sk98lin driver disables the RX MAC FIFO flush feature for all
revisions of the Yukon XL.
According to skgeinit.c of the sk98lin driver, "Flushing must be enabled
(needed for ASF see dev. #4.29), but the flushing mask should be
disabled (see dev. #4.115)". Nice. I implemented this same change in
the sky2 driver and verified that the RX lockup I was seeing was
resolved.

Prevent deadlock in sky2 recovery logic. sky2_down calls napi_synchronize
which gets stuck if napi was already disabled.
Fix by rearranging slightly and not calling napi_disable until after
both ports are stopped. The napi_disable probably is being overly
paranoid, but it is safe now.

Using PCIE advanced error recovery stuff creates more user problems than it's worth.
The AER stuff depends on MMCONFIG and in many configurations it just doesn't work.
Plus it doesn't add any real functionality to the driver. The sky2
driver handles its own errors fine as is.

The Marvell Yukon XL chipset appears to have a hardware glitch
where it will repeat the checksum of the last packet. Of course, this is
timing sensitive and only happens sometimes...

As a workaround just disable hardware checksumming by default on
this chip version. The earlier workaround for PCIX, dual port
was also on Yukon XL so don't need to disable checksumming there.

The PCI AER support may not work for a couple of reasons.
It may not be configured into the kernel or there may be a BIOS
bug that prevents MMCONFIG from working. If MMCONFIG doesn't work
then the PCI registers that control AER will not be accessible via
pci_read_config functions; luckly there is another window to access
PCI space in the device, so use that.

The D-Link PCI-X board (and maybe others) can lie about status
ring entries. It seems it will update the register for last status
index before completing the DMA for the ring entry. To avoid reading
stale data, zap the old entry and check.

Coding note, used a complex switch statement rather than bitmap

In order for the list handling in net_rx_action() to be
correct, drivers must follow certain rules as stated by
this comment in net_rx_action():
/* Drivers must not modify the NAPI state if they
* consume the entire weight. In such cases this code
* still "owns" the NAPI instance and therefore can
* move the instance around on the list at-will.
*/
A few drivers do not do this because they mix the budget checks
with reading hardware state, resulting in crashes like the one
reported by takano@axe-inc.co.jp.

the default ethtool_op_xxx behavior is fine for all drivers, so we
permit op==NULL to imply the default behavior.
This provides a more uniform behavior across all drivers, eliminating
ethtool(8) "ioctl not supported" errors on older drivers that had
not been updated for the latest sub-ioctls.
The ethtool_op_xxx() functions are left exported, in case anyone
wishes to call them directly from a driver-private implementation --
a not-uncommon case. Should an ethtool_op_xxx() helper remain unused
for a while, except by net/core/ethtool.c, we can un-export it at a
later date.

Use the kernel interfaces for advanced error reporting.
This should be cleaner and clear up errors on boot.
For those systems with busted BIOS's that don't correctly
support mmconfig, advanced error reporting will be disabled.
The PCI registers for advanced error reporting start at 0x100 which
is too large to be accessed by legacy functions.

Several devices have multiple independant RX queues per net
device, and some have a single interrupt doorbell for several
queues.
In either case, it's easier to support layouts like that if the
structure representing the poll is independant from the net
device itself.
The signature of the ->poll() call back goes from:
int foo_poll(struct net_device *dev, int *budget)
to
int foo_poll(struct napi_struct *napi, int budget)
The caller is returned the number of RX packets processed (or
the number of "NAPI credits" consumed if you want to get
abstract). The callee no longer messes around bumping
dev->quota, *budget, etc. because that is all handled in the
caller upon return.
The napi_struct is to be embedded in the device driver private data
structures.
Furthermore, it is the driver's responsibility to disable all NAPI
instances in it's ->stop() device close handler. Since the
napi_struct is privatized into the driver's private data structures,
only the driver knows how to get at all of the napi_struct instances
it may have per-device.

Remove unneeded check that caused problems with jumbo frame sizes.
The check was recently added and is wrong.
When using jumbo frames the sky2 driver does fragmentation, so
rx_data_size is less than mtu.

After resume, driver has reset the chip so the current state
of transmit checksum offload state machine and DMA state machine
will be undefined.
The fix is to set the state so that first Tx will set MSS and offset
values.

The FE+ workaround means the driver can no longer trust the status register
to indicate VLAN tagged frames. The fix for this is to just disable VLAN
acceleration for that chip version. Tested and works fine.

The Yukon FE+ chip appears to have a hardware glitch that causes bogus
receive status values to be posted. The data in the packet is good, but
the status value is random garbage. As a temporary workaround until the
problem is better understood, implement the workaround the vendor driver
used of ignoring the status value on this chip.
Since this means trusting dodgy hardware values; add additional checking
of the receive packet length.

Be more selective about when to enable the ram buffer watchdog code.
It is unnecessary on XL A3 or later revs, and with Yukon FE
the buffer is so small (4K) that the watchdog detects false positives.

A driver writer from another operating system hinted that
the versions of Yukon 2 chip with rambuffer (EC and XL) have
a hardware bug that if the FIFO ever gets completely full it
will hang. Sounds like a classic ring full vs ring empty wrap around
bug.
As a workaround, use the existing watchdog timer to check for
ring full lockup.

The length check for truncated frames was not correctly handling
the case where VLAN acceleration had already read the tag.
Also, the Yukon EX has some features that use high bit of status
as security tag.

This fixes the extra timer overhead that people were whining about
as a 2.6.23 regression.
Running the watchdog timer all the time is unneeded. Change it
to run only if link is up, and reduce frequency to save power.

There are special PHY settings available on Yukon EC-U chip that
should not get cleared. This should solve mysterious errors on some
motherboards (like Gigabyte DS-3).

All drivers implement ethtool get_perm_addr the same way -- by calling
the generic function. So we can inline the generic function into the

Doing |= 1 << 19 to 16bit unsigned is not particulary useful;

This patch avoids generating another IRQ if more packets

This patch restores a couple of workarounds from 2.6.16:
* restart transmit moderation timer in case it expires during IRQ routine
* default to having 10 HZ watchdog timer.
At this point it more important not to hang than to worry about the
power cost.

Fix sky2 disabling VLAN completely when the first vid is unregistered.
sky2 disables VLAN completely when the first VID is unregistered. It
should instead disable VLAN when the group is unregistered by calling
sky2_vlan_rx_register with grp = NULL.

This code inherited from the sk98lin driver is incorrect on the Yukon2.
The GPHY_CTRL register values are specific to the internal PHY of the chip
and the values used were leftovers.
Driver was setting bit 13 which is now the INT polarity for the PHY!

This workaround was added to deal with NAPI core and how
it affected dual port shared polling. It turned out not to
be necessary. Stopping device 0 only doesn't stop NAPI from
working completely after that.

Align the PHY setup of the sky2 driver with the vendor sk98lin (10.0.4.3)
driver. The PHY register settings are mostly black magic, even with access
to the documentation it isn't clear what the right values are. The changes
are mostly comments, the code change only affects the Yukon FE (100 mbit only)
version.

If the device is fails during module startup for some reason like
unsupported chip version then the driver would crash dereferencing a

The Yukon EC Ultra chips have transmit settings for store and
forward and PCI buffering. By setting these appropriately, normal
performance goes from 750Mbytes/sec to 940Mbytes/sec (non-jumbo).
It is also possible to do Jumbo mode, but it means turning off
TSO and checksum offload so the performance gets worse. There isn't
enough buffering for checksum offload to work.

This device is having all sorts of problems that lead to data corruption
and system instability. It gets receive status and data out of order,
it generates descriptor and TSO errors, etc.
Until the problems are resolved, it should not be used by anyone
who cares about there system.

On Yukon FE, occasional hardware receive checksum errors are seen.
An early indication of the problem is single bit differences in the two
checksum engines. Use this as a detection mechanism to turn off Rx
checksumming.

This patch splits the vlan_group struct into a multi-allocated struct. On
x86_64, the size of the original struct is a little more than 32KB, causing
a 4-order allocation, which is prune to problems caused by buddy-system
external fragmentation conditions.
I couldn't just use vmalloc() because vfree() cannot be called in the
softirq context of the RCU callback.

The transmit timeout code could hang, and it would not clear out
problems if the hardware was stuck. Change the code to effectively do
a device down/up similar to the suspend/resume code.

The Yukon-FE chip doesn't do gigabit and has a differen PHY internally.
On this chip, phy status register doesn't properly reflect the result
of flow control negotiation. To workaround the problem and avoid having
to have so much chip dependent code; compute the result of flow control
by looking at the local and remote advertised bits.

Maintain packet statistics in software rather than hardware.

In order to change PCI registers (via the iomap'd window),
it needs to be enabled; this wasn't being done in sky2_phy_power

MSI doesn't work properly on resume on many platforms because the
BIOS goes and changes it back to INTx mode after the sky2 driver has
restored in resume.
It is really a bug in the base power management resume code, and
this workaround is temporary until the change to PM code works it's way
through the release process. The PM fix is non-trivial since it needs
to change when non-boot CPU's are enabled.

This patch makes the receive performance on some systems go from
714MB/s to 941MB/s. It adjusts the watermark of the receive queue
to be lower, thereby avoiding excess hardware flow control. This is
most important on the systems which have little/no additional buffering.

Different chips have different sizes of ram buffers, and some versions have
no ram buffer at all!. Be more careful about sizing the ram usage because
it maybe a problem if vendor keeps changing sizes.
There is the (unlikely) possibility that some of the errors on some of the
chips have been caused by partitioning not on a 1K boundary.

It is possible for the sky2 driver NAPI poll routine to be called with
IRQ's disabled if netpoll is trying to make space in the tx queue. This
is an obscure path, but if it happens, the kfree_skb needs to happen
via softirq. Calling kfree_skb with IRQ's disabled is a not allowed.

If sky2 detects out of memory, or gets a bad frame, it reuses the same receive
buffer, but forgets to poke the hardware. This could lead to the receiver
getting stuck if there were lots of errors.

The sky2 driver uses a single NAPI poll routine for both ports on dual ported
cards (because there is a single IRQ and status ring). Netpoll makes assumptions
about the relationship between network device and NAPI that aren't correct
on the second port, this will cause the port to never clear work.
Most systems, just have single port, so not a big issue.
The easy fix is just make the second port, not netpoll capable.

The reason sky2 driver was locking up on transmit on the Yukon-FE chipset
is that it was misconfiguring the internal RAM buffer so the transmitter
and receiver were sharing the same space.
The code assumed there was 16K of RAM on Yukon-FE (taken from vendor driver
sk98lin which is even more f*cked up on this). Then it assigned based on that.
The giveaway was that the registers would only hold 9bits so both RX/TX
had 0..1ff for space. It is a wonder it worked at all!
This patch addresses this, and fixes an easily reproducible hang on Transmit.
Only the Yukon-FE chip is Marvell 88E803X (10/100 only) are affected.

When using flow control, the PHY needs to accept multicast pause frames.
Without this fix, these frames were getting discarded by the PHY before
doing any flow control.

Under high load it is possible to make the receiver FIFO get overloaded.
The driver/hardware recover properly, so there is no reason to fill the log
with lots of extra messages, just update counter.

The result of flow control negotiation should not limit the next
negotiatition. If board is plugged into an old half duplex 10Mbit port,
without pause, then replugged into a gigabit port, it should negotiate
what is desired, not inherit that last negotiation.

The result of duplex negotiation is avaliable in the phy status
register, so use that to simplify code and avoid rereading the PHY.

When PHY is turned off on shutdown, it causes the IRQ to get stuck on.
Make sure and disable the IRQ first, and if IRQ occurs when device
is not running, don't access PHY because that will hang.

The workaround timer is not needed in most systems with proper IRQ
routing and by perodically waking up it adds to laptop power consumption.

Some motherboards don't implement MSI correctly. The driver handles this
but the warning is too verbose and overly cautious.

Adjust the pause threshold on slower systems to keep from getting overrun.
Since FIFO is 2K bytes, don't send XON pause until there is space for a full
frame.

The pci express error handling extensions don't work unless PCI access is via
mmconfig. Otherwise, all accesses to pci config registers greater than 256 fail.
Since the sky2 driver has other ways of getting to PCI config space, it works
around this short coming, but the pci_find_ext_capablity doesn't work.
This backs out commit 91aeb3edbc
Go back to hardcoding, since we know where the error registers are anyway.

Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.
The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).
Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.
Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.
I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.
This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:
struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);
And put the old one back at the end:
set_irq_regs(old_regs);
Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().
In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:
- update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
- profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
+ update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
+ profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);
I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().
Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:
(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
the input_dev struct.
(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
pointer or not.
(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
irq_handler_t.

The previous change to do fragmented receive (post 2.6.18) introduced a bug
where packets are passed up with size set to the size of the receive buffer
not the actual received data. IP silently trims this so it didn't show up
right away.

Use hardware support for chained receive to break up large frames
into multiple pages. This avoids having to do a mult-page allocation
that can fail on a busy system due to fragmented memory.
For normal size MTU, this code behaves the same.

Use the netdevice transmit lock via netif_tx_lock rather than putting
lock in device specific code and using lockless transmit. The code is
cleaner using netif_tx_lock, and the performance is same.

Since a transmit can take several control blocks, the old code waited
until the last control block was marked as done. This code processes
the return values incrementally. This makes slots in the tx ring available
and less chance of getting stuck.

Use the ethernet device name when requesting the irq because the
irqbalance daemon looks for the name when deciding policy.
Better to play along with this dubious heuristic.

Use the standard pci capability mechanism to access PCI express error
registers, rather than hard coding the offset. Mask off the PCI express
error from ever occuring on non-PCI express systems.

Manually resolved conflicts in drivers/net/ixgb/ixgb_main.c and
drivers/net/sky2.c related to CHECKSUM_HW/CHECKSUM_PARTIAL changes by
commit 84fa7933a3 that just happened to be
next to unrelated changes in this update.
Replace CHECKSUM_HW by CHECKSUM_PARTIAL (for outgoing packets, whose
checksum still needs to be completed) and CHECKSUM_COMPLETE (for
incoming packets, device supplied full checksum).
Patch originally from Herbert Xu, updated by myself for 2.6.18-rc3.

Fix problems with transmit pause frames. The driver was telling the
GMAC to flush (not process) pause frames. Manually disabling pause wasn't
working because of problems in the setup.
This maybe the cause of the lockup under load.

location; the driver can save the last information and only tell hardware
when it changes.
